Following the completion of the Antoine Semenyo transfer, Pep Guardiola made history as the top-spending coach in the transfer market.
Having spent 72 million euros on Semenyo, Coach Pep Guardiola has surpassed the 2 billion euro mark in transfer fees during his tenure at Manchester City.
In the list of highest spending managers since Guardiola took charge at Man City, he leads convincingly, followed by Diego Simeone, Antonio Conte, and Massimiliano Allegri. However, no one comes close to the figure of the Catalan strategist, who has exceeded the symbolic 2 billion euro milestone.
Guardiola, who took over Man City in 2016, has built a team dominating both England and Europe through a stable, calculated, and long-term investment strategy. Accompanying this spending are tremendous successes, including multiple Premier League titles and historic Champions League victories.
Some of Guardiola's biggest signings include Jack Grealish (117.5 million euros), Josko Gvardiol (90 million euros), Omar Marmoush (75 million euros), Antonio Semenyo (72 million euros), Ruben Dias (71.6 million euros), and Rodri (70 million euros). Except for Semenyo who just joined, the others have all proven their worth and brought significant success to Man City.
This shows that although Guardiola spends heavily, his investments are generally reliable and highly effective. This is one of the keys that helped Man City rise and become a leading force in European football during the Guardiola era.
However, the golden era of Man City under Guardiola is nearing its end. The Spanish coach is planning to leave Etihad after having conquered all the major honors.
SPORT reports that Guardiola might step down as Man City's head coach right after the 2025/26 season, or at the latest by the end of the 2026/27 season when his contract with the Citizens expires.
Currently, Man City is actively searching for Guardiola’s successor, with the leading candidate being Enzo Maresca, former Chelsea coach. However, the ex-Barca manager has stated that he will remain fully focused on Man City this season and is not thinking beyond that for now.
