Indonesia's world-class coach aims to add more 'foreign players'

Coach John Herdman confirms that Indonesia will accelerate the naturalization of high-level diaspora players, aiming to elevate the national team and prepare the squad for the 2030 World Cup qualifiers.

Head coach of the Indonesian national team, John Herdman, has confirmed plans to intensify efforts to include players of Indonesian descent who are playing abroad in order to enhance the team's quality, with a long-term goal of qualifying for the 2030 World Cup.

Speaking at his introductory press conference at the Mulia Hotel (Jakarta) on the morning of January 13, the Canadian strategist emphasized that Indonesia needs more internationally experienced players to compete at the highest level. Based on his experience leading the Canadian national team, he said that to reach a higher level, a national team must have players competing in top football environments.

“To compete on the world stage, you need first or second-tier players, meaning those playing in the top five national leagues globally,” Coach John Herdman shared. He believes this is a key factor to improving the overall team quality and closing the gap with stronger football nations.

After failing to advance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Indonesia will enter a new cycle targeting the 2030 World Cup. The Asian qualifiers are expected to start in 2027, and this period is seen as crucial for the coaching staff to build the squad, refine tactics, and lay a long-term foundation.

Coach Herdman stressed that the Indonesian team requires players accustomed to high intensity, modern tactical thinking, and the pressures of international competition. “You need players who understand the pace and harshness of top-level football. A player's career doesn't lie—if you are good, you will play at the highest level,” he explained.

Besides seeking and persuading diaspora players, the Canadian coach also highly values the potential of domestic players. According to him, Indonesian football is entering a positive phase with more players eager to represent the national team.

“The Indonesian team currently has energy, spirit, and clear commitment from local players. In the coming years, we hope to discover and develop talents capable of moving to Europe or other major leagues,” Coach Herdman affirmed.
