Lý Đức has truly earned the title of ‘the fortress’ for Vietnam’s U23 team at the 2026 AFC U23 Championship.

The 22-year-old defender performed with confidence and solidity against U23 UAE. From the group stage to the quarterfinals, Lý Đức consistently started matches, playing as the right-sided center-back in Vietnam’s three-center-back formation. He proved why he earned the complete trust of the Korean coach.

From the group matches against U23 Jordan, U23 Kyrgyzstan, to U23 Saudi Arabia, Lý Đức maintained steady form, showing composure and discipline. He continued this level of performance in the quarterfinal clash with U23 UAE.

Faced with intense pressure from the West Asian team, the number 3 defender remained calm, positioned himself smartly, and effectively covered his teammates.

Except for a missed clearance in the first half that led to a long-range shot hitting Trung Kiên’s crossbar by a UAE player, Lý Đức played well for the remainder of the match.

The CAHN defender completed 52 out of 59 accurate passes (an 88% success rate), highlighting his excellent ball distribution skills and commendable confidence as Vietnam’s U23 needed smooth build-up play from the back.

Not only solid in duels in his own position, Lý Đức also fulfilled the role of shielding and covering the right flank whenever full-back Minh Phúc pushed forward.

It was Lý Đức’s composure, ability to read the game, and timely support that enabled Minh Phúc to participate confidently in attacks and leave his mark with a goal and an assist, playing a key role in Vietnam U23’s historic 3-2 win over U23 UAE.

In this match, Lý Đức frequently faced the opponent’s most dangerous attackers, Ali Almemari (number 7) and Ali Abdulaziz (number 8). Despite constant challenges, he stood firm and did not allow either player to get past him throughout the game.
