No top-tier coach is willing to manage Chelsea because, in the post-Abramovich era, the Blues operate like a business, always gambling on young talents. Their defense has been stocked with several promising center-backs in their early twenties, yet the two main starters still come from their own academy. Isn't that quite ironic? Nevertheless, Chelsea is eager to heavily overpay for another 20-year-old defender.
According to French journalist Fabrice Hawkins, Chelsea has prepared an initial offer of €50 million, aiming to sign Rennes’ 20-year-old French center-back, Jacquet, during the winter transfer window.
Jacquet, aged 20, stands 1.90 meters tall, is a right-footed center-back, and is valued at €20 million on Transfermarkt. This season, he has started all 16 Ligue 1 matches he played, totaling 1,424 minutes, with his current contract running until 2029.
With a market value of only €20 million, Chelsea is ready to offer €50 million, but Rennes is reluctant to sell Jacquet. Rennes has set a price exceeding €64 million for him. Their demand is clear: Jacquet must become the club’s record transfer sale, surpassing Manchester City’s €64 million fee for Doku, or there will be no deal.
In my opinion, with Chelsea recruiting like this, their Club World Cup victory might be a “final masterpiece,” making it difficult for them to consistently win major tournaments in the future. What do you think?
