The presence of Xabi Alonso in future strategies has made Liverpool rethink Arne Slot's role as head coach.
Liverpool is undergoing a turbulent season under Arne Slot, which contrasts sharply with the high expectations following a massive £440 million summer investment. Although they still have chances to compete for a top-four Premier League finish and progress in both the FA Cup and Champions League, the Reds clearly lack the consistency and resilience they showed last season.
A severe slump in autumn, with 9 losses in 12 matches, brought Slot close to the brink of dismissal. The 1-4 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League marked the crisis peak, with local media believing the Anfield manager’s seat was only a matter of days away from being vacated.
A subsequent 12-match unbeaten run temporarily eased the pressure on Liverpool, but unconvincing performances and slips against Leeds United, Sunderland, Burnley, and Fulham indicate that the core issues remain unresolved. According to journalist David Lynch, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool’s owners, believe the club needs a strategic change.
However, the American owners are reluctant to risk changing the coach mid-season. Their plan is to continue backing Slot until the end of the campaign, then make a definitive decision in the summer. This approach became clearer when Xabi Alonso emerged as the top target. He chose to wait until the end of the season before returning to coaching.
Lynch suggests Slot’s future is almost sealed unless Liverpool suffers another disastrous losing streak. Meanwhile, The Athletic confirms FSG’s public support for the Dutch coach, unwilling to repeat rivals' mistakes of firing managers mid-season.
Nevertheless, Xabi Alonso’s departure from Real Madrid has changed the situation. The arrival of a strong candidate with deep ties to Anfield increases the pressure on Slot. Securing a Champions League spot is considered the minimum requirement; failure to do so would likely result in a summer parting of ways.
