Julian Alvarez comments on the speculation linking him to Chelsea, while Atletico Madrid is prepared to discuss a deal with a hefty price tag.
Julian Alvarez has become a key figure in the transfer market as Chelsea officially enters the race to sign the Atletico Madrid striker. After leaving Manchester City in 2024, the Argentine forward quickly proved his worth in La Liga, maintaining a consistent goal-scoring form that has attracted attention from top European clubs.
Joining Atletico for a fee of £82 million, Alvarez scored 29 goals in his first season in Spain. This season, the 26-year-old striker has added another 11 goals across all competitions. His impressive scoring rate has made him a central figure in coach Diego Simeone’s attack and the biggest hope for the capital club.
However, Alvarez’s ambitions for trophies at Atletico remain unfulfilled. The red-and-white team finished third in La Liga last season and currently sits fourth, eight points behind Barcelona. The absence of major titles has started to raise questions about Alvarez’s future, especially as Premier League clubs continue to closely monitor him.
Previously, Arsenal and Liverpool considered bringing Alvarez back to England but eventually chose other options. Arsenal signed Viktor Gyokeres, while Liverpool invested heavily in Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike. Nevertheless, interest in Alvarez remains strong, with Chelsea, Barcelona, and PSG reportedly keeping a close watch on his situation.
Chelsea urgently needs a high-class striker despite spending nearly £100 million on Joao Pedro and Liam Delap last summer. Pedro scored eight goals but has yet to truly shine, while Delap has only one Premier League goal. This has led Chelsea’s management to continue seeking a more reliable option.
According to the Daily Mail, Alvarez is open to the possibility of returning to the Premier League. The 2022 World Cup winner scored 36 goals over two seasons at Man City, winning the Champions League, FA Cup, and two Premier League titles despite not always being a regular starter. This experience makes him an attractive target.
Atletico Madrid is currently reluctant to sell Alvarez but is reportedly willing to listen if offered €100 million. In response to the rumors, Alvarez has stated that his focus remains on the current season with Atletico, especially the important Champions League match against Galatasaray, before considering his longer-term future.
