Although playing at home against a much weaker opponent, Chelsea found it tough to secure a win over Pafos.
A late header from Moises Caicedo secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory for Chelsea against the weaker Pafos side, strengthening their hopes of direct qualification to the Champions League round of 16.
Chelsea had to work hard to avoid a two-legged playoff after losing Enzo Maresca’s final away Champions League match against Atalanta last December, but this narrow win in Liam Rosenior’s first Champions League game in charge lifted them to eighth place thanks to goal difference.
The pressure remains intense ahead of their upcoming trip to Napoli on Wednesday, with eight teams on 13 points and five others just three points behind Chelsea, but the direct qualification spot—and the chance to avoid a congested February schedule—is currently in Chelsea’s hands.
Rosenior’s first Champions League match proved difficult during the initial 78 minutes, as Enzo Fernandez had a first-half header disallowed for a push, while Pafos goalkeeper Jay Gorter made a series of outstanding saves for the resilient visitors.
The Cypriot champions even struck the woodwork on the opposite end, with Jaja’s shot hitting Reece James’ hand and then the post. The visitors’ penalty appeals were rightly denied since the Chelsea captain’s arm was tucked close to his chest, but it served as a warning to Chelsea.
Estevao was introduced in the second half to inject energy into Chelsea, who were missing Cole Palmer after a rest, but the Brazilian’s powerful volley was saved by Gorter, followed by a brilliant block from Bruno. Later, defender Derrick Luckassen blocked Alejandro Garnacho’s shot.
Just as Chelsea began to worry about missing out on the top eight, Caicedo headed in a decisive goal from a corner kick that was accidentally touched by Pafos’ Nany Dimata, giving coach Rosenior an ideal start in this competition.
