Four clubs have lost their chance to advance in the Champions League following the results of the 7th group stage matches.
The final round of the group stage Champions League will take place on January 29 (Vietnam time), with all matches played simultaneously, promising an exciting night of football.
The race to the top 8 remains intense, as only 3 points separate the 6th placed team from the 18th before the last round. Teams finishing between 9th and 24th will enter a two-legged playoff round. Meanwhile, the winners will qualify for the round of 16.
Although many teams still have a chance to compete, some clubs have already been officially eliminated regardless of the final round results. Kairat Almaty from Kazakhstan earned just 1 point in their debut Champions League appearance, despite gaining attention by eliminating Celtic in the qualifiers. Villarreal, who reached the semifinals in the 2021/22 season, also had a disappointing campaign with the same low point tally.
Eintracht Frankfurt and Slavia Prague find themselves in similar situations, becoming the four teams confirmed out with one match still to play. At the same time last season, as many as nine teams were eliminated early. Currently, teams ranked 25th to 32nd have almost no hope left, although theoretically they could still reach the playoff round. Olympiacos from Greece currently holds the last playoff spot.
This is the second season that the Champions League uses the new format, where the top 8 teams in the standings qualify directly for the round of 16. Arsenal have already achieved their goal by securing progression with a perfect record of 7 wins.
Bayern Munich currently sits second with 18 points from 6 wins, while Real Madrid and Liverpool closely follow with 15 points each after recent crucial results. Tottenham, despite struggles in the Premier League, have performed impressively in Europe, ranking fifth after 7 matches.
