Liverpool defeated Marseille 3-0 on their home turf at the Velodrome, rising to fourth place in the Champions League and maintaining a 13-match unbeaten run in all tournaments.
Liverpool continues to demonstrate consistent performance in the Champions League by convincingly winning 3-0 against Olympique de Marseille at Stade Vélodrome, moving up to fourth place in the standings and stretching their unbeaten streak to 13 games across all competitions.
Marseille entered the match with high confidence after scoring 14 goals in their last two games and having defeated Newcastle United in November. However, Liverpool under coach Arne Slot showed necessary caution and quickly took control of the game. Alexis Mac Allister nearly opened the scoring with a right-footed shot narrowly wide, before Hugo Ekitike’s goal was disallowed due to offside.
The home team struggled to organize attacks despite some notable moments from Mason Greenwood. From a free kick, Greenwood delivered a well-placed cross that forced Amine Gouiri to shoot, requiring Alisson to make a save. Nevertheless, it was Liverpool who made the difference. Just before halftime, Dominik Szoboszlai executed a clever free kick, curling the ball low under the wall and past goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli to give the visitors the lead.
In the second half, Marseille pushed forward seeking an equalizer, making the game more open. Greenwood repeatedly tested his luck but couldn’t beat Alisson, while Liverpool created several dangerous counterattack chances. In the 72nd minute, Jeremie Frimpong’s dribbling and sharp cross caused Rulli to awkwardly score an own goal, doubling Liverpool’s lead.
Not stopping there, Cody Gakpo sealed the 3-0 victory with a precise finish assisted by Ryan Gravenberch. This win brings Liverpool closer to directly qualifying for the Round of 16, while Marseille faces the risk of only competing for a playoff spot in the final matchday.
