If Jurgen Klopp becomes the head coach of Real Madrid, he is said to want two players from the current roster to depart the club.
Real Madrid dismissed coach Xabi Alonso earlier this month, after he had been in charge for less than eight months.
Shortly after, the Bernabeu club appointed another former player, Alvaro Arbeloa, who had been managing the Castilla team. However, Arbeloa’s tenure began in the worst possible way as Real were knocked out of the Copa del Rey in the third round following a defeat to Albacete, a lower division side.
Nevertheless, Real quickly regained confidence with a 2-0 victory over Levante in La Liga, before thrashing Monaco 6-1 at home in the Champions League. Details surrounding Arbeloa’s appointment, such as contract length, were barely disclosed. Real simply announced him as the new head coach after Alonso’s departure.
This sparked speculation that Arbeloa could be replaced once the season ends. According to Diario AS, Real’s management mentioned the name Jurgen Klopp for the head coach position earlier this month, but this plan is currently on hold.
Klopp currently serves as the global sporting director for the Red Bull group. When asked by The Athletic about rumors linking him to Real, the German coach admitted he found it both amusing and tiring. Klopp stated he knows he can still coach, but that doesn’t mean he wants to do it for life, and he has no desire to move to another team.
However, according to Defensa Central, if Real approaches him and Klopp agrees to take over, he would demand the departure of two players first. The names mentioned are Daniel Carvajal and Ferland Mendy, the duo who have collectively won the Champions League 8 times with Los Blancos.
Carvajal (6 Champions League titles) is directly competing for the right-back position with Trent Alexander-Arnold, whom Klopp developed into one of the world’s best attacking full-backs at Liverpool. The 34-year-old recently returned from an anterior cruciate ligament injury and his contract expires next summer.
Meanwhile, Ferland Mendy (2 Champions League titles) has consistently struggled with muscle injuries since moving to Spain, with this season being particularly severe. The French defender has played only 2 minutes in La Liga and appeared once in the Champions League. In early January, Mendy suffered a calf injury, his fourth in 12 months, and he remains sidelined.
