Thép Xanh Nam Định is currently trialing the French-Vietnamese midfielder Jessy Nguyễn, a 24-year-old who has played nearly 100 matches in France and is expected to bring fresh energy to the V.League.
The V.League market continues to see new faces of overseas Vietnamese players seeking opportunities to prove themselves as Thép Xanh Nam Định conducts trials for midfielder Jessy Nguyễn, a player of mixed Vietnamese-French heritage who has spent several years playing semi-professionally in Europe.
Jessy Nguyễn was born in 2001 in France to a Vietnamese father and a French mother. Growing up in the European football environment, the 24-year-old developed a strong desire to return to his father's homeland to test himself in the V.League. Although he has not yet completed the Vietnamese citizenship process, Jessy remains closely monitored by domestic experts as part of the overseas Vietnamese player group.
In terms of skills, Jessy Nguyễn stands out due to his solid physique, standing about 1.80 meters tall, combined with a physically demanding playing style. He is a versatile midfielder capable of performing various roles in the midfield, from defensive midfielder, box-to-box midfielder to winger when needed. His strengths lie in his ability to contest possession, endure physical challenges, and adapt tactically—key attributes for the physically intense environment of the V.League.
Before coming to Vietnam for trials, Jessy Nguyễn played for SO Châtellerault, a club competing in National 3 (the fifth tier in France). Although not a top-level league, National 3 is regarded as a tough competition where players must maintain high intensity and strict tactical discipline. During his time with this club, Jessy appeared in 96 matches, played nearly 7,000 minutes, scored 4 goals, and provided 3 assists.
Vietnamese football in recent years has seen a growing trend of French-Vietnamese players returning home. Names like Cao Pendant Quang Vinh, Kevin Phạm Ba, Leygley Adou Minh, and Ryan Ha have partly proven their value and paved a new path for Vietnamese-origin players active in Europe. In this context, Jessy Nguyễn is considered the next candidate to try his luck in Vietnam's top league.
However, opportunity does not guarantee success. The V.League is continuously improving in qualitywhich forces clubs to be cautious when signing, especially players on trial who have never competed at the highest level. Jessy Nguyễn himself had a trial period at Hồng Lĩnh Hà Tĩnh but was unable to stay, indicating that establishing oneself in Vietnam is not an easy journey.
Currently, Jessy Nguyễn is still awaiting the final assessment from Thép Xanh Nam Định’s coaching staff. If he meets the requirements in terms of skills, tactics, and mentality, the French-Vietnamese midfielder could definitely become a new piece for the Nam Định team soon.
