Striker Nguyễn Xuân Son expressed modesty when discussing his brace against Lion City Sailors on the night of January 29.
In Nam Định's 3-0 victory over Lion City Sailors in the Shopee Cup quarterfinals, striker Nguyễn Xuân Son continued to impress with a double strike for the home team at Thiên Trường Stadium. After just three matches, Xuân Son has scored 8 goals, a rate that has surprised many fans in the region.
After the match, Xuân Son was named the best player. The Vietnamese national team striker could not hide his happiness following the win and Thép Xanh Nam Định’s early qualification for the semifinals.
Regarding his personal form, Xuân Son modestly credited his goals to rigorous training under coach Mauro’s guidance and significant support from his teammates: “My teammates always try to create many chances and deliver the ball for me to finish. I am confident in my scoring ability but still need to improve my defensive skills to better support the team," he said.
With Thép Xanh Nam Định being the only Vietnamese team left in the Shopee Cup 2025/26, Xuân Son affirmed his and the team’s strong ambition: “I want to win and I want to be champions. With the current squad and quality players, if we all follow the coaching staff’s tactical plans properly, we believe we can compete fairly with any opponent.”
Meanwhile, Nam Định’s head coach, Mr. Mauro Jerónimo, praised:“Xuân Son not only scores goals but also contributes well defensively and presses effectively. The second goal was a direct result of successful pressing.”
After this match, Xuân Son will join Thép Xanh Nam Định club on an away trip to Thanh Hoá for the 12th round V-League match.
