The recent collective resignation of all Executive Committee (Exco) members of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) is viewed as a step to allow the football authority to reorganize its governance and administration towards better efficiency.
Mohd Firdaus Mohamed, President of the Malaysian Football Association (PBMM), believes that parties should avoid overreacting and instead calmly assess the situation for the benefit of national football.
Mr. Firdaus calls on all involved parties to allocate the necessary time and space so that the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) can conduct assessments and assist with restructuring the FAM.
According to him, the AFC has extensive experience and expertise in helping member associations restore governance systems, including issues related to integrity.
“The AFC possesses the knowledge and skills to help rehabilitate FAM’s image and reputation, which have been somewhat affected following the forgery scandal involving seven national players. Therefore, they should be given the space to carry out a thorough evaluation,” he added.
PBMM, which is also a member organization of FAM, views this move as possibly the best opportunity for FAM to undertake a comprehensive reform of its administrative management and governance system.
“All parties need to stay calm and approach the matter rationally. What has happened essentially opens the door for FAM to reorganize its management and operations more effectively and efficiently,” he stated.
Mr. Firdaus believes this development should be seen positively, as every crisis can become a starting point for significant change.
“What is unfolding should be viewed from a positive perspective for the sake of national football. We want to see a stronger system that gains trust from all parties”, he emphasized.
Previously, the FAM Exco members resigned en masse to prevent the risk of Malaysian football being suspended by FIFA, amid allegations of weak governance following the incident involving forged documents of seven national team players.
