Current Manchester United manager Carrick might face an awkward situation, potentially paving the way for someone else. He must lead the team to Champions League qualification to have a chance at becoming permanent; however, if the Red Devils return to Europe’s premier competition, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the INEOS group are expected to invest heavily, aiming to compete for the Premier League or even the Champions League next year, which likely means hiring a world-class manager.

According to Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United’s leadership deeply respects and appreciates Carrick’s outstanding contributions so far and hopes he can maintain this high level of performance.
If he manages this, he could be considered for the permanent head coach position. However, no guarantees have been made to him regarding this outcome.
The club is continuing its search for a coach to identify the ideal candidate capable of leading the project in the coming years. Currently, Sir Ratcliffe has not held any meetings with other coaches or their representatives, as it is still early. In the coming weeks, Manchester United will intensify internal discussions and begin narrowing down the options.
This process may take several months, so if Carrick continues to perform well, he could genuinely earn an opportunity. Nevertheless, the club’s leadership remains unconvinced that he is the best fit to lead Manchester United to a title challenge soon.

Carrick’s record at Manchester United is promising; however, he has notable weaknesses, such as limited solutions against deep defensive blocks and a lack of experience in tactical in-game adjustments. These are the gaps that separate good coaches from world-class ones.
According to UK’s Sky Sports, Manchester United has not accelerated the appointment of a new manager and still does not consider Carrick the frontrunner for the position.
TEAMtalk reports that Manchester United has included Brazil’s head coach Ancelotti in a shortlist of five candidates, viewing him as the most likely to lead the team to reclaim the Premier League title and challenge for the Champions League. Ancelotti took over a trophyless Real Madrid in 2021 and has since won the Champions League twice in three years.
Manchester United legend Gary Neville has consistently recommended hiring Ancelotti: "I have mentioned that Ancelotti might join Manchester United. He is 66 years old now and probably holds one of the best jobs in the world. He may only have one last club job left. When it comes to a coach with patience, composure, and Premier League experience, there is no doubt that person is Ancelotti."

Renowned correspondent Mark Ogden also mentioned that current England manager Tuchel is a strong candidate. Like Ancelotti, if England fails to win the World Cup, Tuchel could leave the "Three Lions" and become an available coach.
If the choice is between Carrick and Oliver Glasner, Antonio Iñarra, Marco Silva, or De Zerbi, many Manchester United fans would back Carrick; but if the competition includes elite coaches like Ancelotti or Tuchel, opinions are likely to shift.
Before taking charge, Carrick knew he was likely a transitional figure. Out of love for Manchester United, even knowing he might not be made permanent, he remains committed to helping the team secure Champions League qualification.
In that case, even if he does not become the permanent manager at Manchester United, Carrick could still have broader opportunities ahead. His former club Tottenham is reportedly interested, along with Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, and Fulham, all of whom will be changing managers this summer.

Whatever the final outcome, one thing is certain: this summer will be a very busy period for Manchester United.
