On February 17th Beijing time, the freestyle skiing women's big air final wrapped up at the Milan Winter Olympics. Canada narrowly defeated China to claim the top spot, while Chinese competitor Eileen Gu overcame an error by executing a flawless third jump, earning 179 points and a precious silver medal. This is Gu’s second silver of the event and China’s fifth medal. The updated gold medal tally shows Norway in first place, Italy second, and the United States third!

China has faced a tough Winter Olympics, going nine competition days without a gold medal, which is truly disappointing. Many sports have seen significant setbacks, especially short track speed skating, prompting serious reflection. Tonight was Lunar New Year’s Day, and Eileen Gu, the defending champion, competed in her specialty, freestyle skiing big air, aiming for gold. We were very hopeful for her victory, but unfortunately, that hope was dashed once again!

The final consisted of three rounds, with the best two scores counting toward the final ranking. Gu scored only 90 points in the first round, placing third, then suffered a major mistake in the second round, earning just 61.25 points, putting the pressure on her third jump. Showing great composure, Gu scored 89 points in the final round. Despite her efforts, she missed out on gold and took home a valuable silver, while the gold went to Canada’s Aldenham, who performed more flawlessly. The margin was very close, making it a narrow defeat and ending Gu’s bid for a repeat title. This is Gu’s fifth Olympic medal in her career — whenever she competes, she always medals, proving her strong ability!

It’s truly heartbreaking that after ten competition days, we still haven’t won a gold medal, falling far behind Japan and South Korea. The latest gold medal standings show a near monopoly by European and American countries. Norway, despite no golds today, remains first with 12 golds and 28 medals overall. Host nation Italy holds second place with 8 golds and 23 medals, edging out the United States, which is closely followed by the Netherlands. Even Japan from Asia has won 4 golds. We are in a somewhat awkward position — when will our first gold arrive?
