Manchester City maintains intense pressure on Arsenal in the Premier League title chase, after securing a 1-0 win against Leeds United at Elland Road, their sixth straight victory over "The Whites" in direct meetings.
Man City's desire for victory was clearly greater than Leeds', but the home side started more proactively. A golden opportunity fell to Dominic Calvert-Lewin when he found himself unmarked in the box to meet Brenden Aaronson's pass, yet his left-footed strike unfortunately missed the far post. Minutes later, he had a chance to make amends by sneaking into the penalty area, but another left-footed shot was dragged wide and went out of play.
Leeds continued to create opportunities while Man City struggled to control the game's tempo. Aaronson nearly opened the scoring with a near-post run and a touch toward goal, but Marc Guéhi made an excellent block. It wasn't until the 39th minute that Man City forced Karl Darlow into action, as the goalkeeper, after repeatedly denying Omar Marmoush, had to push away Nico O’Reilly's close-range header.
However, City gradually regained their rhythm before halftime and surprisingly took the lead in first-half stoppage time. Antoine Semenyo escaped his marker in the box to successfully finish from Rayan Aït-Nouri's cross, scoring a goal somewhat against the run of play.
Entering the second half, Leeds continued with determined intent. Calvert-Lewin remained their most dangerous threat, once again breaking free at the far post only to be thwarted by Matheus Nunes' timely intervention in a critical moment.
Man City were not at their smoothest, but could have doubled their lead after over an hour of play. Rúben Dias's mishit shot inadvertently turned into a chance for Omar Marmoush at the far post, but despite stretching fully, he could only steer the ball wide of the target.
Ten minutes later, City came close to a second goal again when Guéhi's dangerous header forced Darlow into a goal-line save. This prompted manager Daniel Farke to make two attacking substitutions with 15 minutes remaining.
His gamble helped Leeds increase pressure on Gianluigi Donnarumma's goal, but they couldn't find an equalizer. This result allows Man City to reduce the gap to league leaders Arsenal to just 2 points, while Leeds remain 6 points above the relegation zone.
