Arsenal vs Chelsea: Every Match is a Final

Despite sharing the goal of victory in the London derby to stay on track in the Premier League, the challenge for Arsenal is coping with the pressure of the championship chase, whereas for Chelsea it is their performance and the quality of their play.

This match is not a showcase of strength, but a test of endurance. One team carries the burden of the title race, the other grapples with performance issues and an immature structure. When demands exceed mental and physical readiness, even a minor misstep can derail everything for both sides.

Arsenal's Problem

Arsenal still leads with 61 points after 28 matches, 5 points ahead of Man City but having played one more game. This means everything could collapse if they fail to defeat Chelsea.

Anxiety was evident in the first half of last weekend's derby. Mikel Arteta's side made numerous individual errors, from misplaced passes to losing possession leading to Declan Rice's conceded goal.

This marks the third consecutive Premier League match, and the fourth in their last six, where The Gunners have conceded within 10 minutes of scoring. This highlights the pressure the players are under during the decisive phase of the season. Their tension breeds doubt.

It is the consequence of repeated psychological setbacks in previous years, the pressure to recapture their peak early-season form, and the strain from correcting mistakes made in earlier dropped points.

Arteta's team is tactically astute but is driven by the hunger for the title, which leaves little room for the necessary mental "breaks" for recovery. The constant demand to maintain playing quality and perfection in every detail becomes a heavy burden. Meanwhile, the intensity and rigorous tactical demands of the Spanish coach seem to be pushing the players beyond their limits.

At their peak, Man City always had a safety "buffer" built on championship experience and the ability to accelerate. Pep Guardiola's team could underperform for a match or two but maintained composure thanks to players capable of transcending tactical constraints.

Arteta lacks such advantages. They lack winning experience, and the players become unconditional "servants" of the system rather than sources of creative spark. The win over Tottenham may have eased some surrounding tension, but The Gunners never feel at ease due to a shortage of mental energy reserves, which has prevented them from performing at their highest level consistently for an extended period.

Chelsea's Problem

After 15 matches and nearly two months since Liam Rosenior arrived at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea has not changed much from Enzo Maresca's tenure: The Blues cannot sustain high performance over 90 minutes.

This accurately reflects the club's squad structure, which relies on many young players, making it difficult to execute a playing style consistently or maintain effectiveness over long periods.

Ultimately, this is the task for the 41-year-old manager: to continue the club's project, developing the existing foundation rather than revolutionizing it. In reality, Rosenior is trying to shift from Maresca's slow, cautious approach to a more direct and effective ball-control style.

This style requires a completely different pressing approach—full-pitch pressing, something the players have never done before. Chelsea sets pressing "traps" by forcing opponents wide before closing in to block their forward passing options.

Simultaneously, it combines line-breaking passes from deep positions to exploit the speed and technique of the forwards. The Blues have scored many goals from such situations, but an unchanged reality is the players' lack of experience, which creates significant risk both in and out of possession.

Because opting for man-to-man pressing can lock down passing lanes but also leaves the defensive system more exposed. Chelsea clearly lacks seasoned center-backs capable of covering large spaces in front and behind. The team often struggles against direct opponents and cannot control the game's rhythm.

While successful tackles in the final third have decreased from 5 to 3.7 per match, making Rosenior's tactics less effective in the latter stages. The biggest issue remains defensive mistakes that could once again put them at a disadvantage against Arsenal.
