Placed in the second seeding group, Vietnam's futsal squad will meet Thailand right from the group phase of the Southeast Asian Futsal Championship.
On the afternoon of March 1st in Nonthaburi (Thailand), the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) held the draw ceremony for the 2026 ASEAN Futsal Championship. Representing the Vietnam Football Federation at the event was Vice Chairman Tran Anh Tu. According to the draw results, the Vietnam futsal team is in Group A alongside host Thailand, Myanmar, and Timor-Leste.
This is considered a highly competitive group, featuring Thailand—the host nation, with the richest tradition and most achievements in Southeast Asian futsal history. Meanwhile, Myanmar is also an opponent known for their strong and challenging style of play.
It is also worth noting that the Vietnam and Thailand futsal teams seem to have a recurring "fate," as they have frequently been drawn into the same group in recent international tournaments. For instance, in both the 2024 and 2026 AFC Futsal Asian Cup finals, the draw results consistently placed the two teams in the same group.
Group B includes defending champion Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Brunei, promising plenty of exciting developments, particularly the competition among strong teams like Indonesia, Australia, and Malaysia.
Prior to the draw, the teams were divided into five seeding pots. Pot 1 consisted of Thailand (host) and Indonesia; Pot 2 included Vietnam and Australia; Pot 3 was Malaysia and Myanmar; Pot 4 comprised Timor-Leste and Cambodia; and Pot 5 was Brunei.
According to the schedule, the 2026 ASEAN Futsal Championship will take place from April 5th to 11th, 2026, at the Nonthaburi Provincial Gymnasium (Thailand). The group stage matches will be held from April 5th to 7th, 2026, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semifinals on April 9th, 2026. The final match is scheduled for April 11th, 2026.
