Jose Mourinho states that Gianluca Prestianni's career at Benfica will end if he is convicted of racially abusing Vinícius, while UEFA's investigation is ongoing.
Coach Jose Mourinho asserts that Gianluca Prestianni will have no future at Benfica if found guilty of racially targeting Vinícius during the Champions League match against Real Madrid.
The 20-year-old Argentine player is currently under investigation by UEFA after Vinícius accused him of using racially discriminatory language during the first leg of the play-off in Lisbon last month. Previously, Prestianni received a temporary one-match suspension and missed the return leg, where Real Madrid secured victory to advance to the round of 16. While denying all allegations, the young midfielder still faces the risk of a heavier penalty if found guilty.
Speaking ahead of Benfica's match on Monday, Mourinho emphasized a zero-tolerance stance toward all forms of discrimination. The Portuguese strategist had previously stirred controversy by suggesting that Vinícius's goal celebration might have provoked the audience, while not directly condemning Prestianni. However, this time he adopted a firmer position.
“I am completely, absolutely opposed to any form of discrimination, prejudice, or ignorance. If my player disrespects those principles, which are also the principles of Benfica, his career under Coach Jose Mourinho and at Benfica will be over,” Mourinho stated during the press conference.
He also stressed the principle of presumption of innocence: “I am not a scholar, but I am not ignorant either. Presumption of innocence is a human right. If he is truly guilty, I will never look at him the same way again. For me, it would be finished. But there are many ‘ifs’ involved here.”
The incident occurred after Vinícius scored the only goal in Real Madrid's 1-0 victory at the Estadio da Luz. At that moment, Prestianni was alleged to have covered his mouth with his shirt while directing words toward the Brazilian star, raising suspicions of inappropriate conduct. UEFA is still continuing its investigation before issuing a final verdict.
