Coach Filipe Luis was sacked mere hours after Flamengo's crushing 8-0 victory against Madureira, which clinched their place in the Campeonato Carioca final.
Recently, Club Flamengo announced the dismissal of Coach Filipe Luis. Additionally, the team also parted ways with assistant Ivan Palanco and fitness coach Diogo Linhares in this round of changes.
Notably, the decision was made by the leadership right after Flamengo thrashed Madureira 8-0 in the Campeonato Carioca semifinal, thereby earning a place in the final. Despite the resounding victory, the former Atletico Madrid and Chelsea player could not retain his position following what was deemed the club's worst start to a season in a decade. Flamengo lost to Corinthians in the Brazilian Super Cup and were defeated by Argentina's Lanus in the Recopa Sudamericana.
According to Globo, Filipe Luis did not receive any official explanation for the dismissal decision, nor was he given prior notice. Sources indicate the decision was made just before kickoff. Football director Jos Boto delivered the news in a brief meeting after the players had left the stadium. The former Brazilian national team player is expected to return to the Ninho do Urubu training center to bid farewell to the players and staff.
Filipe Luis leaves his post after 101 matches in charge, achieving a win rate of 69.9% with 63 wins, 23 draws, and 15 losses, including 5 defeats occurring in 2026.
Filipe Luis was appointed as Flamengo's head coach in 2023 after making a strong impression in the youth academy. He began his coaching career with the U17 team in March 2024 after retiring, winning the Copa Rio, and then led the U20 team to a world championship title in June. On September 30, he was promoted to the first team to replace Tite and quickly secured the 2024 Copa do Brasil title.
In 2025, under his guidance, Flamengo added to its trophy cabinet with titles such as the Brazilian Super Cup, Campeonato Carioca, and Copa Libertadores. However, a penalty shootout loss to PSG in the Intercontinental Cup final combined with early-season stumbles led to mounting pressure.
Despite having recently extended his contract until 2027, the relationship between Filipe Luis and President Luiz Eduardo Baptista and Boto is said to have become strained lately, with communication between the parties growing increasingly sparse.
Flamengo has not yet confirmed who will lead the team in the Campeonato Carioca final against Fluminense. However, the leadership wants to quickly finalize personnel plans. Leonardo Jardim, who has been on the president's radar since late last year and is currently in Brazil, is considered the top candidate for the position at the Maracana.
