Just two days prior to the opening match against the Vietnam women's team, Indian players had to jointly send a petition to their country's football federation because the competition uniforms were not the right size.
The preparation situation of the Indian women's team in Perth (Australia) is becoming chaotic due to an unbelievable logistical error. After many days of waiting due to clearance procedures, the shipment of competition uniforms from New Delhi finally arrived at the team's hotel. However, instead of joy, the players and coaching staff were shocked to discover that these kits were actually produced for... youth teams.
According to the Times of India, up to 80% of the total 26 players could not fit into these uniforms. The issue was so severe that the team had to request the organizers to postpone the equipment check and official photo session. This directly impacts the team's morale as the crucial match against Vietnam at 18:00 on March 4th is approaching.
Extremely frustrated by the unprofessional handling, key players like Sweety Devi, Manisha Kalyan, and Grace Dangmei signed a letter sent directly to the All India Football Federation (AIFF). In the letter, the national team players emphasized:
“In recent days, players and the coaching staff have faced significant difficulties due to the lack of proper uniforms... The arrival of incorrectly sized competition kits at this critical moment further affects our morale and disrupts our focus. Representing India on the international stage demands professional standards, including appropriate competition and training attire.”
This incident exposes the unfortunate reality that the Indian national team currently lacks an official kit sponsor, leading to mismanagement of competition equipment.
Under pressure from public opinion and the players, the AIFF urgently arranged to purchase 55 sets of kits from an Italian company with available stock in Perth as replacements. A senior AIFF official confirmed: “We were informed the kits did not fit and have addressed the issue. The customized kits with names and numbers will be ready one day before the match.”
Despite facing this "unfortunate" incident, Indian players affirm they will still give their all for the national colors. However, having to wear "hurriedly purchased" uniforms and dealing with the resulting distraction is undoubtedly a significant disadvantage for coach Amelia Valverde's squad. This can be considered an intangible psychological advantage for the Vietnam women's national team ahead of their clash in Group C of this year's Asian Cup.
