European media unanimously turned their attention to Madrid as the name Jurgen Klopp was unexpectedly placed at the center of high-level discussions within a La Liga giant.
According to the famous sports program El Chiringuito, Atletico Madrid has opened advanced-stage negotiations with Jurgen Klopp. The German tactician currently holds the position of Global Football Director at Red Bull, but the possibility of his return to a coaching role is being seriously discussed.
Notably, this move is being directly driven by Apollo Global Management—the controlling shareholder of Atletico. CEO Mark Rowan is believed to be the mastermind behind the plan to "refresh" the managerial seat, with the goal of replacing Diego Simeone. For over a decade, Diego Simeone has not only been the coach but has become a symbol of power and the winning spirit at Atletico Madrid. Therefore, this "overhaul" plan is the core of the entire story currently shaking Madrid.
Although previously linked with Real Madrid, Klopp in the past has not hidden his fondness for the red-and-white striped club. He once shared: "I like the model of Atletico. In Germany, I didn't choose Bayern Munich but went to Dortmund. When I moved to the Premier League, I also didn't go to Man City, but chose Liverpool. I genuinely admire Atletico's model." This statement is now being recalled as an opening signal.
On the other hand, Klopp's future at Red Bull is no longer certain. According to L'Equipe, he no longer enjoys absolute support from the corporation's top management. Although CEO Oliver Mintzlaff has denied the rumors, the declining performance of key clubs within the system is increasing the pressure.
In Germany, RB Leipzig is currently 5th in the Bundesliga, trailing Bayern Munich by 19 points with 10 rounds left and no guarantee of a Champions League spot. The team also exited the Europa League group stage early, amid controversy over the decision to appoint Ole Werner— a choice once supported by Klopp.
Additionally, Klopp is said to be not deeply involved in strategic decisions at Paris FC, where Red Bull holds a 10.6% stake, and was absent from the process of choosing Stephane Gilli's successor. After 20 months away from Liverpool, the 1967-born strategist is believed to want a return to coaching, and Atletico Madrid could be the most explosive destination.
