Premier League title race: Arsenal wins narrowly, Man City suffers a regrettable setback

Round 29 of the Premier League saw a pivotal shift in the championship battle, with Arsenal and Manchester City undergoing entirely opposite emotional states.

While Mikel Arteta's side left the Amex with all three points against Brighton, Man City was held to a 2-2 draw by Nottingham Forest right at the Etihad.

At the Amex, Arsenal did not deliver a dazzling performance, but they demonstrated the resilience expected of a title contender during the decisive stage.

Right from the opening minutes, the visitors had a heart-stopping moment. Goalkeeper David Raya made a risky play with a careless pass near his own penalty area. Carlos Baleba immediately attempted an audacious lob that sailed over Raya's reach.

In a moment when a conceded goal seemed inevitable, defender Gabriel managed to retreat and head the ball clear right on the goal line. This was not only an excellent save but also a turning point in the match.

After escaping danger, Arsenal immediately struck back. In the 9th minute, Bukayo Saka received the ball on the right wing, cut inside to his familiar central position, and unleashed a shot from the edge of the box. The strike wasn't particularly powerful but was precise enough, as goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen fumbled, letting the ball slip through his hands and legs before rolling into the net.

The early goal allowed Arsenal to shape the game according to their plan: maintaining a compact defensive shape, avoiding excessive pushing forward, and waiting for counter-attacking opportunities.

Brighton controlled possession for much of the game, but they lacked sharpness in the final third. Late in the first half, the home team appealed for a penalty after a collision between Gabriel Martinelli and Mats Wieffer in the box. However, referee Chris Kavanagh waved play on, visibly displeasing manager Fabian Hurzeler as he headed into halftime.

After the break, Brighton increased the pressure. In the 52nd minute, Georginio Rutter fired a fierce shot from outside the box, forcing Raya into a save. Over an hour into the match, from a cross by Yankuba Minteh, Wieffer rose for a relatively free header, but the ball went straight to Raya. These chances reflected the home side's commendable effort, yet clinical finishing was still missing.

Arsenal also had an opportunity to seal the game. In the 75th minute, Leandro Trossard – a former Brighton player – broke through one-on-one but his shot went wide of the post.

Nevertheless, the crucial point was that Arteta's team maintained their focus and preserved their slender lead until the final whistle. They were not spectacular, but they clearly displayed the qualities of a team that knows how to win even when not at their absolute best.

This victory gained even more significance as, in the same round, Man City was held to a 2-2 draw by Nottingham Forest. At the Etihad Stadium, the Citizens took the lead twice but allowed their opponents to equalize on both occasions.

Antoine Semenyo opened the scoring in the 31st minute, before Morgan Gibbs-White leveled the score early in the second half. Rodri once again put Man City ahead with a clever header in the 62nd minute, but Elliot Anderson equalized for Nottingham Forest at 2-2 in the 76th minute.

In the closing minutes, Erling Haaland went down in the box twice but was not awarded a penalty. Despite registering 21 shots compared to the opponent's 9, "The Citizens" could not convert their dominance into a win. The final whistle blew in a heavy atmosphere, as Pep Guardiola understood his team had lost control of their own destiny in the title race.

After Round 29, Arsenal extended their lead to 7 points over Man City. Even if the Manchester side wins their game in hand and the upcoming direct clash, they can no longer reach the top spot on their own.

The advantage in the Premier League title race is now leaning towards Arsenal. If they can maintain this high level of consistency, Mikel Arteta and his players have a genuine chance of conquering England's most prestigious trophy this season.
