Goalkeeper Senne Lammens points out Manchester United's 'fatal' weakness

Goalkeeper Senne Lammens acknowledged that Manchester United had a disappointing performance following their 1-2 loss to Newcastle United, while urging the entire team to learn from the experience and quickly bounce back stronger.

Goalkeeper Senne Lammens acknowledged Manchester Unitedhad a collectively subpar performance in their 1-2 defeat against Newcastle United in the latest Premier League round. A 90th-minute goal from Will Osula ended the Red Devils' 11-match unbeaten streak and marked their first loss of 2026.

Speaking after the match, Lammens could not hide his disappointment with the team's overall display at St James' Park. “This is truly a very disappointing result. We knew the match would be difficult, especially playing away, and the manager had also warned us about that,” the Belgian goalkeeper said.

According to Lammens, Manchester United did not have a good first half, although a late goal before halftime helped the team regain some morale. Casemiro scored in the ninth minute of added time after referee Peter Bankes allowed play to continue following Anthony Gordon's penalty. “We didn't perform to our standard in the first half, but the goal right before halftime allowed us to go into the break with a fairly positive feeling, especially since the opponent was down to 10 men,” he shared.

However, Manchester United failed to capitalize on their advantage in the second half after Jacob Ramsey had already been sent off earlier. Lammens believes the team lacked the sharpness to finish the game. “The manager said it wouldn't be easy at all. We needed to attack more aggressively to seal the match early, because if the score remained 1-1, a single moment could change everything. And today, that's exactly what happened,” he stated.

Manchester United's goalkeeper also candidly admitted that the visiting team was outmatched by their opponents in terms of intensity and competitive spirit. “In terms of physicality and effort, we didn't bring what was necessary, not as much as they did. When the opponent is passionately supported by their home crowd, it makes the match even more challenging,” Lammens commented.

Manchester United will have an 11-day break before their crucial match against Aston Villa in the race for a Champions League spot. Lammens called on the entire team to quickly recover from this defeat. “Today is certainly very disappointing, but we need to quickly reflect on the issues and respond. Starting tomorrow, the whole team must train with high intensity to prepare for the next match,” he affirmed.
