Supercomputer predicts Premier League top 5 race: Liverpool faces risk of missing Champions League qualification

The race for Champions League qualification in Premier League2025-26 is heating up more than ever, as the supercomputer from Opta provides its latest forecast on the probability of teams securing a top-five finish.

According to simulation results, Liverpool is the team with the highest risk among the direct competitors, with a 63.1% chance of failing to secure Champions League qualification next season.

This new scenario emerged after a turbulent midweek round of matches. Among the contenders competing for a spot in the UEFA Champions League, only Chelsea secured a victory by defeating Aston Villa with a score of 4-1.

Meanwhile, both Manchester United and Liverpool suffered disappointing defeats. Liverpool lost 1-2 to the bottom-placed team Wolverhampton Wanderers, while Manchester United fell to a 1-2 defeat at the home ground of Newcastle United.

Based on 10,000 simulation runs for the remainder of the season, Opta's supercomputer predicts Aston Villa has the highest chance among this group, possessing an 80% probability of finishing the season within the top five.

According to Opta's analysis, Aston Villa, under the guidance of manager Unai Emery, is likely to conclude the season at the third position. Following Aston Villa is Manchester United with a 76.2% chance of reaching the top five, despite the team experiencing its first defeat under interim manager Michael Carrick.

Opta's supercomputer provides the latest forecast on the likelihood of Premier League teams finishing in the top five.

Chelsea ranks third among the contenders with a 65.7% opportunity to finish in the top five. Given England's high UEFA coefficient, the fifth position is almost certain to qualify for next season's Champions League. Conversely, Liverpool is predicted to end the season in sixth place, meaning they would miss out on Europe's most prestigious club competition.

Apart from the four teams mentioned above, Brentford is the closest challenger but only holds a 10.8% likelihood of squeezing into the top five. Other teams such as Everton, Newcastle United and AFC Bournemouth still have opportunities, but their chances of creating a surprise are considered low.

The final rounds promise to be extremely tense. Manchester United will host Aston Villa in a direct clash with significant implications for the Champions League race. Meanwhile, Liverpool will face Tottenham Hotspur, while Chelsea confronts Newcastle after a break for the fifth round of the FA Cup. Notably, Manchester United still has to meet both Chelsea and Liverpool within the final nine matches, and Chelsea will travel to Anfield in early May.

Despite the fierce competition in the Premier League, some teams still have alternative paths to Champions League qualification. Aston Villa could secure a direct spot by winning the UEFA Europa League. Unai Emery's team is currently rated by bookmakers as a strong contender for the title and will face Lille OSC in the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, Chelsea and Liverpool could still participate in next season's Champions League if they triumph in this competition this season.

Given the current situation, the Premier League's top five race is forecasted to remain volatile, and just a few slip-ups could dismantle the Champions League ambitions of the major clubs.
