Malaysian media recently commented as the home team shares a group with Vietnam U17 in the 2026 Southeast Asia U17 Championship.
The draw for the 2026 Southeast Asia U17 Championship placed Vietnam U17 in Group A alongside Malaysia, Timor Leste, and host Indonesia. Immediately after this result, Malaysian media made notable comments about the group's dynamics, especially as the home team faces Vietnam U17 early on.
The newspaper Makanbola stated that the journey of Malaysia U17 in the upcoming tournament will not be easy. According to this newspaper, having to face Indonesia and Vietnam right from the group stage puts the young Malaysian coach and his team under significant pressure. Makanbola wrote that “Malaysia will face a tough challenge entering the Southeast Asia U17 Championship.”
Malaysian media also paid special attention to the clash with Vietnam U17. The article suggested that “the encounter between Malaysia and Vietnam is predicted to be the most anticipated match by fans of both teams in the group stage.” The youth football systems of these two nations have had many direct competitions in the region, so this match is considered the focal point of Group A.
The Malaysian newspaper also recalled the not-so-pleasant memory of its youth team against Vietnam. In their encounter during the U17 Asian Cup qualifiers in November 2025, Malaysia suffered a heavy 0-4 defeat. Therefore, the country's media believes the upcoming match is also an opportunity for the young Malaysian players “to reclaim the debt owed to the opponent.”
According to the draw result by the Southeast Asian Football Federation, this year's tournament has 12 teams divided into 3 groups. Only the three group winners and the best-performing runner-up advance to the semifinals, making the competition more intense. Hence, Group A, featuring Vietnam, Indonesia, and Malaysia, is regarded as the most notable group.
The 2026 Southeast Asia U17 Championship will take place from April 11 to April 23 in East Java (Indonesia). This is seen as a crucial preparatory step for the 2026 U17 Asian Cup finals, where many teams in the region aim to compete for a spot in the U17 World Cup.
