Arteta warns Arsenal could lose reputation if defeated by a third-tier team

Manager Mikel Arteta warned Arsenal to be extremely cautious against third-tier Mansfield Town in the FA Cup, because a shock elimination could seriously harm the team's reputation.

Manager Mikel Arteta issued a warning to Arsenal players about the risk of disappointment if they are eliminated by third-tier Mansfield Town in the FA Cup. According to the Spanish strategist, a defeat against an underestimated opponent could significantly affect the London club's reputation.

Speaking before the match, Arteta acknowledged that Arsenal have been eliminated from the FA Cup in forgettable ways multiple times. “We have been eliminated a few times in very unacceptable ways, and that feeling is terrible. It damages the team's reputation, and we don't want that to happen again.”, he said.

Arsenal were eliminated by Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup third round in both 2018 and 2022. Since 2017, the Gunners have only once progressed beyond the fourth round of the competition. The FA Cup title in 2020 under Arteta remains the most recent trophy for the Emirates Stadium side.

This season, Arsenal still have opportunities to compete on multiple fronts. Besides the FA Cup, they are also aiming for the League Cup final against Manchester City on March 22, while maintaining their pursuit in the Premier League and Champions League.

Although rated higher than Mansfield Town, Arteta insisted that Arsenal cannot afford to be complacent. “I have been in England long enough to understand that being considered the favorite means nothing. In these types of matches, the opponent always believes they can beat you.”, he emphasized.

The 43-year-old coach also stated that the players need to be ready to adapt to the difficult playing conditions at One Call Stadium, where the pitch is currently in poor condition. “That is the beauty of the FA Cup. You have to go there, adapt to the circumstances, and find a way to win.”, Arteta affirmed.
