Lawyer calls for urgent ban on Manchester United player's participation

Manchester United captain and center-back Harry Maguire has once again become the center of controversy after a Greek court sentenced him to 15 months of suspended imprisonment related to an incident nearly six years ago.

Notably, the lawyer representing the police officers involved in the case made a shocking appeal by requesting football authorities to ban Maguire from continuing to play in the Premier League. According to the ruling of the Greek Criminal Appeals Court on the island of Syros, Maguire was convicted of acts of minor assault, resisting public officials, and attempting bribery. The retrial took place after the previous sentence was overturned due to the English player's appeal.

The incident originated from Maguire's summer vacation on the famous tourist island of Mykonos in 2020. At that time, the Manchester United defender was arrested following a brawl with local police. Initially, he was convicted of aggravated assault and received a 21-month suspended sentence. However, this sentence was later overturned to proceed with a retrial.

Maguire has just been sentenced following the incident in Greece six years ago.

In the latest trial, a panel of three judges delivered a verdict with a 2-1 ratio, declaring Maguire guilty and imposing a 15-month suspended sentence. Nevertheless, the star born in 1993 immediately reacted by stating that the entire trial process was "a mess" and affirmed that he would continue to appeal to a higher court in Greece.

What made the case more heated was the strong statement from lawyer Ioannis Paradissis, who represents the involved police officers. “Sports organizations and football governing bodies need to review this case immediately and impose appropriate penalties as demanded by justice. It is inappropriate for a person with a criminal record related to violence to continue playing in the Premier League and become a role model for young fans worldwide, as this does not align with the values of sports.”— this lawyer stated.

Paradissis emphasized that football governing bodies should consider imposing additional penalties on Maguire. According to his viewpoint, it is unsuitable for a player with a criminal record related to violence to still compete in England's top league, as it contradicts the values that sports aim to uphold.

While off-field controversies remain unresolved, Maguire continues to play for Manchester United. The English defender even participated in the Red Devils' 1-2 loss to Newcastle United at St James' Park on the same day the trial took place. According to sources, Maguire was offered an out-of-court settlement of approximately £43,500, but he refused this agreement. This indicates the English player's determination to pursue the lawsuit to the end in order to protect his reputation.

Currently, the Greek court has not imposed any travel restrictions on Maguire. However, some legal experts suggest that this sentence could cause certain complications in the future, especially if the player needs to apply for a visa to the United States should he be called up to participate in the FIFA World Cup 2026 with the England national team.
