Lionel Messi is unexpectedly alleged to be the factor causing the 2026 Finalissima match between the Argentina National Team and the Spain National Team to be unable to take place.
According to SunSport, Lionel Messi is said to have played a key role in causing the 2026 Finalissima match between the Argentina National Team and the Spain National Team to be unable to proceed. A source revealed that the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner firmly prioritized personal plans, thereby contributing to the match's cancellation. However, Messi's representatives have denied the information suggesting his personal commitments were related to this decision.
Initially, Messi and his teammates in the Argentina National Team were scheduled to face the Spain National Team at Lusail Stadium in Qatar on March 27. However, the match became uncertain early next month when the Middle East region experienced multiple upheavals, making the plan to host it in Qatar no longer feasible.
In an effort to salvage the match, UEFA proposed three alternative options for the two national teams. One of them was to organize the Finalissima in a two-leg format, with the first leg taking place in Madrid and the return leg being held in Buenos Aires.
Nevertheless, the Argentine Football Association rejected all these proposals. Additionally, La Albiceleste is also said to want a fee equivalent to the amount they expected to earn if the match were held in Qatar.
Another factor preventing the match from taking place is the stance of coach Lionel Scaloni. The manager is reportedly unwilling for the Argentina National Team to play this special friendly match, fearing his players might face a heavy defeat similar to the 1-6 loss against the Spain National Team before the 2018 World Cup. The Argentine side once believed that defeat negatively affected the team's performance at the World Cup in Russia and contributed to their early elimination in the round of 16.
Meanwhile, according to SunSport, the Spanish side accepted all proposed options hoping the match could still be organized. The Spanish Football Federation is said to be very eager for the Finalissima to happen, viewing it as an opportunity to send a message of world football unity amid the volatile international situation.
In an official statement, UEFA also confirmed that after numerous discussions with organizing bodies in Qatar, the Finalissima between Euro 2024 champion Spain and Copa America 2024 champion Argentina cannot take place in Qatar on March 27 as originally planned due to the current political situation in the region.
