In response to Manchester United's outrage over Ross Barkley's goal, the Premier League Match Center has officially issued an explanation regarding the controversial VAR decision.
Manchester United's 3-1 victory against Aston Villa ended with complete joy for Michael Carrick and his team, but the aftermath regarding refereeing decisions remains a hot topic among fans.
The most fiercely debated incident occurred in the 64th minute when Ross Barkley scored the equalizing goal to make it 1-1 for the visitors. Immediately after the ball entered the net, the red-shirted players reacted vehemently, arguing that Aston Villa's Amadou Onana was in an offside position and directly interfered with the play.
To calm the conflicting public opinion, the Premier League Match Center released an official statement clarifying the VAR team's working procedure at Stockley Park. The published announcement emphasized: “The referee's decision to award the goal was checked and confirmed by VAR. Onana was in an offside position, but was not deemed to be obstructing the goalkeeper's view or touching the ball.”
According to the organizers' explanation, although the Belgian midfielder was in a sensitive position, the camera angles did not provide sufficient evidence to show that he obstructed goalkeeper Senne Lammens' vision or had any physical impact altering the ball's trajectory.
However, this explanation seems to have further ignited the fury from fans and experts. On Sky Sports television, former star Gary Neville expressed utter astonishment at this decision. He shared that Onana himself appeared to admit touching the ball during the celebration.
Neville voiced his skepticism: “It seems like it was Onana. Was he blocking Lammens' path? That's harsh; Lammens had no chance in this situation.
VAR confirmed they were checking whether there was any ball contact from Onana. You can't be sure the ball hit Onana; only he knows, and he's unlikely to admit it. Oh, did he just say the ball hit him?”.
Neville's skepticism also echoed the sentiments of numerous Red Devils supporters on social media platforms. Many opinions argued that even if the ball didn't touch Onana, his stance directly in front of the goalkeeper while offside was an act of direct interference in the match.
A portion of fans further pointed out that Onana's movement to dodge inadvertently deceived goalkeeper Lammens' perception, making Ross Barkley's finishing shot impossible to stop. Although the final result still favored the home team at Old Trafford, the explanation from the organizers Premier League certainly still fails to satisfy those demanding absolute transparency from VAR technology.
