The local organizing committee, in coordination with UEFA and CONMEBOL, has decided to cancel the Qatar Football Festival 2026.
The Finalissima 2026 match between European champion Spain and Copa America champion Argentina was scheduled for March 27 at Lusail Stadium in Doha. However, UEFA stated that they have held discussions with the organizing bodies in Qatar and concluded that the match cannot proceed due to the current political situation in the region.
The local organizing committee in Qatar explained that airspace disruptions and travel restrictions have forced the cancellation of the Qatar Football Festival 2026. Besides Spain and Argentina, the event originally included teams such as host Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Serbia, which were scheduled to play friendly matches this month.
According to the initial plan, this football festival was to feature six matches, with the Argentina national team participating in two. Alongside matches involving Lionel Messi and his teammates, the tournament also arranged four other notable fixtures. Specifically, Saudi Arabia would face Egypt, Qatar would play Serbia, followed by Egypt meeting Spain and Serbia competing against Saudi Arabia.
Regarding the Finalissima 2026, the cancellation of this match is not solely related to security concerns in Qatar. UEFA indicated they considered several alternative proposals, but all were deemed unsuitable by the Argentine Football Association (AFA).
Initially, UEFA proposed hosting the match at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid, with supporters of both teams allocated equally across the stands.
Later, another proposal was to organize the Finalissima as a two-leg format. The first leg was planned for the Bernabeu on March 27, while the second leg would be held in Buenos Aires during a national team gathering before the next Euro and Copa America in 2028.
However, AFA rejected both proposals. According to UEFA, Argentina later suggested postponing the match until after the World Cup, but the Spanish national team did not have a suitable schedule.
UEFA also stated they had requested the Argentina national team to commit to playing if a neutral venue in Europe could be secured, with the event scheduled for March 27 or a backup date of March 30. Nevertheless, this proposal ultimately did not receive approval from Argentina.
