Trong Son continues to demonstrate impressive form after being named in the Vietnam U23 squad.
Bac Ninh suffered a disappointing 2-3 defeat against Ho Chi Minh City in Round 12 of the 2025/26 First Division, despite striker Nguyen Trong Son – a player recently called up to the Vietnam U23 team – having a standout performance. The two goals from this forward were insufficient to help the home team secure a point.
Prior to the match, Bac Ninh entered the encounter against Ho Chi Minh City with high confidence, having secured four consecutive victories. The home advantage also motivated coach Paulo Foiani and his team to aim for a full three points to continue chasing the league leader, Binh Phuoc.
The home team started favorably when Trong Son opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a precise finish. However, this advantage did not last long, as just three minutes later, Dao Tan Loc scored an equalizer, making it 1-1 for the southern representative.
Not stopping there, Ho Chi Minh City even took the lead before the end of the first half. In the 43rd minute, Bac Ninh's defense made a marking error, allowing Nguyen Cong Thanh to easily beat goalkeeper Huynh Tuan Linh, giving the visiting team a 2-1 advantage heading into the break.
In the second half, Bac Ninh pushed their formation forward to seek a tying goal. The continuous pressure from the home team finally paid off when Trong Son shone again in the 69th minute, completing a brace and bringing the match back to a 2-2 equilibrium.
Nevertheless, while Bac Ninh was preoccupied with attacking to secure a win, they paid the price during stoppage time. In the 90+1 minute, Le Canh Gia Huy capitalized on a quick counter-attack to score the decisive goal, sealing a 3-2 victory for Ho Chi Minh City against the team advised by former Vietnam national team coach Park Hang Seo.
