Dion Cools, captain of the Malaysian national team, showed resolve before facing Vietnam in the last Asian Cup 2027 qualifying round.
Recently, Cerezo Osaka confirmed that defender Dion Cools has been called up to the Malaysian national team for the final Asian Cup 2027 qualifier.
Despite the national team facing potential heavy penalties from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) following an unfavorable ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), Dion Cools remains highly motivated. This defender affirmed he will give his utmost effort to help Malaysia achieve a positive result against Vietnam, thereby advancing closer to the goal of qualifying for the Asian Cup 2027 finals.
The captain of the Malaysian national team shared: "Representing the national team and playing for the country is always a great honor. This is a crucial match in our quest to qualify for the Asian Cup, so I will prepare thoroughly and strive wholeheartedly for a good result against Vietnam. I am eagerly anticipating this challenge.."
Dion Cools is currently a key pillar for the Malaysian national team in the Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers. The 1996-born defender is one of the few players who have started all five matches so far, playing a vital role in helping Malaysia secure a perfect 15 points. During the emphatic 4-0 victory over Vietnam at Bukit Jalil last June, Cools performed solidly on the right flank and even contributed with a pre-assist for a teammate's goal.
Despite having a perfect winning record before the final match, the Malaysian national team faces a significant risk of being handed a 0-3 default loss in two matches, against Nepal and Vietnam, due to using seven ineligible naturalized players.
Previously, CAS issued a ruling stating that the Malaysian Football Association committed violations in the naturalization process. According to this decision, all involved players are banned for 12 months along with a financial penalty. Furthermore, the case has been forwarded to AFC for review and disciplinary action against the Malaysian national team.
Recently, representatives from AFC indicated that the organization is preparing to announce an official penalty. Consequently, Malaysia may face a minimum fine of 1,000 USD and also be awarded a 0-3 default loss in matches where improperly naturalized players were used.
If this scenario occurs, Malaysia's advantage in the group standings could shift to Vietnam, who are currently just three points behind. In that case, Coach Kim Sang Sik and his team would gain control in the race to qualify for the Asian Cup 2027 finals.
AFC is expected to announce the official disciplinary ruling soon. This decision is likely to be made before Coach Peter Cklamovski's team travels to Vietnam for the final Asian Cup 2027 qualifier match.
