Southeast Asian fans react fiercely as AFC 'hesitates' to award Vietnam a 3-0 win over Malaysia

New statements from AFC regarding Malaysia's naturalization case continue to spark debate among Southeast Asian fans about the possibility of Vietnam being awarded a victory.

According to Malaysian media, AFC General Secretary Datuk Seri Windsor Paul John made notable remarks concerning the scandal involving the documentation of seven naturalized players in the Malaysian national team. He presented this information during a joint press conference between AFC and the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) at FAM headquarters on March 16.

The AFC leader stated that Malaysia's case cannot be directly compared to the previous Timor Leste situation, as the timing of the violation discovery differs. Windsor explained that Timor Leste's violation was only discovered after the tournament had concluded, while Malaysia's case was detected during the ongoing Asian Cup qualification round. These remarks are drawing public attention, especially amid widespread anticipation for AFC's decision on the outcomes of related matches.

Windsor emphasized that AFC is not a criminal investigation agency and can only address matters within the scope of football regulations. “We are not police. I just want to stress that we are not a law enforcement agency. We do not have the authority to arrest or summon anyone,” he said. According to him, all disciplinary decisions will be made by the AFC Disciplinary Committee based on existing regulations.

Additionally, AFC is conducting a comprehensive audit of the Football Association of Malaysia. The assessment involves collaboration with FIFA and over 20 international experts to review FAM's governance system, organizational structure, decision-making processes, and development policies. The audit report is expected to be completed before the 2026 World Cup.

One fan observed: “Perhaps the official decision from AFC will only come after the rematch between Vietnam and Malaysia. I think the scenario will still be Vietnam being awarded the win.”
