In its latest press conference, AFC cited Article 25, preparing to impose a penalty framework of a 0-3 forfeit for Malaysia against the Vietnam national team.
After five matches in Group F of the final Asian Cup 2027 qualifying round, the Vietnam national team has secured 12 points with a +6 goal difference, temporarily ranking second. Meanwhile, Malaysia leads with 15 points and a +14 goal difference, establishing a certain advantage before the final match. Therefore, the competition for the top spot in the group is not officially concluded.
In the decisive match, the Vietnam national team will host Malaysia at home. However, the 0-4 defeat in the first leg places Coach Kim Sang Sik and his team at a significant disadvantage in head-to-head performance. To reverse the situation and claim the top group position to secure a direct ticket to the Asian Cup 2027, Vietnam must defeat Malaysia by at least a 5-goal margin – a task deemed extremely challenging.
Nevertheless, the opportunity for the Vietnam national team is not entirely closed. Malaysia currently faces the risk of a 6-point deduction by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) due to using improperly naturalized players in two matches against Vietnam and Nepal. If forfeited 0-3 in both these matches, Malaysia would lose 6 points, and then Coach Kim Sang Sik's team would virtually secure a ticket to the Asian Cup 2027 finals, regardless of the result in the final match.
In the latest development, during a press conference on March 16, 2026, AFC leadership stated that the organization will apply two disciplinary clauses against the Malaysian national team concerning suspected use of ineligible naturalized players. Specifically, Article 56 stipulates that the AFC Disciplinary Committee has the authority to penalize the federation and violating players with a minimum fine of USD 1,000 for each involved party.
Additionally, AFC's Article 25 specifies that if a team uses a player not meeting eligibility requirements, the match result will be annulled. In such a case, the opposing team will be awarded a forfeit win with a 3-0 score and granted an additional 3 points on the standings.
Recently, responding to Malaysian media, AFC General Secretary Windsor Paul John also confirmed that the two aforementioned clauses will be applied in cases of illegal player usage, as suspected regarding 7 naturalized players of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) during the Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers. If Malaysia is forfeited 0-3, the Vietnam national team will officially secure a ticket to the Asian Cup 2027 finals.
