Despite the Finalissima super cup match between Argentina and Spain being officially canceled due to disagreements over the venue, UEFA still expressed special gratitude towards Real Madrid for their dedicated support.
The entire football world received disappointing news as the Finalissima final—the dream showdown between the Euro champion Spain and the Copa America champion Argentina—was officially canceled.
The match, originally scheduled for March 27 in Doha (Qatar), could not take place due to armed conflicts in the Middle East and the inability to find a suitable alternative venue. However, in their latest announcement, the European Football Association (UEFA) surprisingly publicly honored Real Madrid for their tireless efforts to salvage this tournament.
In the official statement, UEFA explained that they closely collaborated with the Spanish Royal team to bring the match to the Santiago Bernabeu stadium. UEFA emphasized:
“The first plan was to hold the match at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid on the originally scheduled date, with 50% of spectators allowed. This would have been a world-class venue worthy of such a prestigious event, but Argentina refused.”
Moreover, a compromise proposal was also developed by Real Madrid and UEFA, involving a two-leg format. Accordingly, one match would be held at Bernabeu on March 27, and the return match in Buenos Aires ahead of Euro 2028. UEFA stated: “This proposal was also rejected.”
All efforts to find a neutral venue in Europe or reschedule the match later reached a dead end when the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and Spain could not reach a consensus on timingn.
Although this passionate project failed, UEFA still used the most respectful words to acknowledge the professionalism of Los Blancos. The statement from the European football authority read:
“The European Football Association sincerely expresses gratitude to Real Madrid CF, the organizers, and the Qatari authorities for their support and cooperation in the efforts to organize this match. In the case of Real Madrid, their efforts were made within an extremely short timeframe.”
The cancellation of the match means fans will miss the opportunity to witness the historic showdown between Lionel Messi and young talent Lamine Yamal. Additionally, the €5 million support fund from the Qatari sponsor for each federation will not be paid.
This incident leaves UEFA with great regret, as external circumstances and disagreements in negotiations deprived them of the chance to host a top-tier event at one of the world's most modern stadiums, Santiago Bernabeu.
