Malaysia surprisingly dispatches only a U16 squad for the 2026 Southeast Asian U17 Championship, whereas Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Myanmar, and Australia all field U17 teams.
The Malaysia Football Association has decided to gamble on U16 players for the 2026 Southeast Asian U17 Championship. The decision to send 16-year-old players instead of 17-year-olds to the 2026 Southeast Asian U17 Championship in Indonesia this April was made to help Malaysia's U16 team, managed by coach Shukor Adan, prepare early for the 2027 Asian U17 Cup qualifiers next November.
The technical director of the National Football Development Program (NFDP), Datuk Ong Kim Swee, stated that this decision was made after discussions with the leadership of the Malaysia Football Association (FAM), including FAM's technical director, Scott O'Donell.
"The 2026 Southeast Asian U17 Championship is essentially used as a preparatory or warm-up tournament for teams from the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) who will participate in the 2026 Asian U17 qualifiers in Saudi Arabia next May.
Five teams, including Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, and Australia, have sent U17 teams (born in 2009) to this tournament because they have secured qualification for the event in Saudi Arabia, while Malaysia did not after failing in the qualifiers last November."
"Therefore, we decided that Malaysia will only send a U16 team (born in 2010) to the 2026 Southeast Asian U17 Championship to provide initial preparation for the Harimau Malaya U16 team ahead of the 2027 Asian U17 Cup qualifiers next November.
"Even though sending a squad one year younger than the other five teams, I am confident and believe that Malaysia's U16 players under the guidance of Shukor Adan will still be able to pose a significant challenge in Indonesia," heKim Swee said.
The 2026 Southeast Asian U17 Championship will take place in East Java, Indonesia from April 11 to 24, 2026, with Malaysia placed in Group A alongside host Indonesia, Vietnam, and Timor-Leste. Group B consists of Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, and Philippines, while Group C includes Australia, Cambodia, Singapore, and Brunei.
