Arsenal must protect Max Dowman like Barcelona cherishes Yamal

With just a few soft touches of his left foot, Max Dowman (born December 31, 2009) brought a warm glow to Arsenal, softening the team's edges and weaving part of their anxieties into his own story. If Arsenal truly wins the title—and Manchester City seems to underestimate that "if"—the image of Dowman being hugged by teammates at the Emirates corner will surely become one of the season's most unforgettable moments.

Early in the season, there was considerable criticism about using young players, as Dowman—then only 15—began integrating into Arsenal's first team. Increased physical demands, the leap in level from youth football: these topics were heavily debated, sometimes tinged with moral panic.

But now most of those questions seem outdated to the point of absurdity. Dowman, now 16, clearly possesses the strength to hold his own in top-level adult football. His ability to influence at this level became evident since his impressive debut against Leeds in August.

The greater concerns with players like Dowman actually lie in the psychological aspect. How will a 16-year-old handle pressure, scrutiny, failure? And how will he cope if success arrives too early? These are not easy to predict beforehand.

Premier League clubs invest heavily in nurturing young talent. Arsenal has been particularly successful in bringing Bukayo Saka, Myles Lewis-Skelly, and Ethan Nwaneri from the academy to the first team in recent years. They could also play six more Champions League matches. Given the season's trajectory, many of those will be emotionally intense. Dowman is not entering a low-risk environment.
