After a phase of less convincing play, the Vietnam futsal squad is presented with a chance to reassert its standing as they compete in the Southeast Asian Futsal Championship 2026, taking place in Thailand at the beginning of April.
With the return of several key players, particularly the experienced goalkeeper Ho Van Y, the team under coachDiego Giustozziis expected to reclaim the image of one of Southeast Asia's strongest futsal teams.

For many years, Vietnam futsal has maintained a formidable position in the region and continent, having twice participated in the FIFA Futsal World Cup.
However, recently the team has shown signs of stagnation. At theAFC Futsal Asian Cup 2026in Indonesia, the Vietnam team was halted in the quarter-finals by the host nation itself.

Notably, Indonesia subsequently advanced directly to the final and even nearly defeated the champion Iran. This demonstrates the rapid progress of Indonesian futsal in recent years.

In reality, Indonesia is emerging as a new force in regional futsal due to a systematic development strategy over the past five years. Under the guidance of coach Hector Souto, who is well acquainted with Vietnam, Indonesian futsal has developed a modern style of play, rich in speed and intense pressing.
They possess abundant financial resources, a well-invested league system, along with modern facilities and training equipment. Consequently, Indonesia has not only improved player quality but also created squad depth, making them a formidable opponent in Southeast Asia and the continent.
While Indonesia is rising strongly, Thai futsal shows signs of decline. Despite still having a star player Muhammad Osamanmusa, the current generation of Thailand struggles to match the golden-era predecessors like Suphawut Thueanklang or Kritsada Wongkaeo. As these pillars gradually left the team, Thailand has not yet produced a successor generation of sufficient caliber, causing a clear drop in overall strength.
This shift in the regional landscape opens an opportunity for Vietnam futsal. One crucial factor for the team to regain stability is the goalkeeper position, long considered "half the team" in futsal. Therefore, the return of Ho Van Y holds great significance for the team's defensive system.
The goalkeeper, who has twice attended the World Cup and is regarded as one of the best in Vietnam futsal history. His reflexes, concentration, and international experience have helped the team overcome many tense matches. In fact, the period of Van Y's absence due to injury coincided with the team's declining performance.
Nevertheless, the return of the 29-year-old goalkeeper still comes with questions. After nearly a year of injury treatment, Van Y certainly needs more time to regain his match feel. Pre-tournament friendly matches will be opportunities for the coaching staff to assess his form and adaptability.
Besides the goalkeeper issue, Vietnam futsal also lacks a truly sharp center forward. Currently, young player Da Hai is seen as the most potential option, but inconsistency remains a weakness for this striker.
Thinh Phat possesses good physique but has not maintained psychological stability in finishing. Therefore, coach Diego Giustozzi has given an opportunity to young prospect An Lam Toi to prepare for the long-term future.
These experiments show that Vietnam futsal is not only aiming for immediate goals at the Southeast Asian Championship but also preparing for larger objectives like the AFC Futsal Asian Cup 2028 and a ticket to the FIFA Futsal World Cup 2028.
In the context of Indonesia's strong rise and Thailand's signs of decline, the upcoming Southeast Asian Championship is precisely the opportune moment for Vietnam futsal to reaffirm its position.
If Ho Van Y quickly regains his form and the attack improves its finishing ability, Diego Giustozzi's team can fully return to the championship race and prove that Vietnam futsal remains a formidable force in the region.
