Champions League Round of 16: Why did Premier League teams fail to win?

Six Premier League teams competed in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16, and none managed to win. What is really going on with the English sides?

Fans of the Premier League were disappointed as Newcastle and Arsenal drew, while the other four teams—Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea, and Tottenham—all lost to opponents like Galatasaray, Real Madrid, PSG, and Atletico Madrid.

Issues of fitness and converting opportunities

The reasons for the failures of the English representatives have been analyzed, with fitness concerns being highlighted.

"Fatigue has been cited as a key factor for the difficulties this week. In fact, five of the six English teams above have played the most matches in Europe this season, while Tottenham ranks ninth," reported The Athletic.

Similarly, Premier League players also lead in total minutes played this season, with Newcastle defender Malick Thiaw topping the list and Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk coming second.

The Athletic also provided statistics showing Premier League teams expend more energy in domestic campaigns. Premier League matches consistently feature more sprints than games in the other Top 5 European leagues. Currently, the Premier League leads with sprints covering 230 meters per average 60 minutes of play, while La Liga, Serie A, and Ligue 1 exceed 200 meters, and the Bundesliga is around 197 meters.

Nevertheless, The Athletic noted that none of the six Premier League representatives appeared overly exhausted in the midweek matches. That leads to a simpler explanation: five of the six first-leg fixtures were played away. English clubs win only up to 35% of matches when playing in Turkey, Germany, and Spain, the locations of three of those five games.

Analyzing each match individually, tactical factors, ability to capitalize on chances, and individual errors contributed to the English teams' inability to secure wins.

Opta stated: "The six English teams were extremely wasteful in attack, while their opponents were not. The Premier League sides scored only 6 goals from 65 shots, with a total xG (expected goals) of 8.4, but conceded 16 goals from 66 shots, corresponding to an xG of 9.7."

Arsenal struggled against Leverkusen, finding it difficult to convert ball possession into opportunities.

Man City and Tottenham both lost by a three-goal margin in their first-leg matches.

The risk of elimination is now evident

Meanwhile, Liverpool showed defensive fragility, inefficient finishing, and a bit of misfortune in their loss to Galatasaray.

Pep Guardiola failed due to tactical risks against Real Madrid. Man City deployed an ambitious attacking lineup with Erling Haaland, Antoine Semenyo, Jeremy Doku, and Savinho, but Real Madrid easily disrupted their system. Valverde even scored a hat-trick in the first half.

Newcastle displayed immaturity at the elite level by allowing Barcelona to equalize in stoppage time. At a moment when they should have protected their lead, Newcastle became rushed in the final minutes, repeatedly launching long clearances and losing composure as the match approached its conclusion.

Chelsea manager Rosenior paid a heavy price for experimenting with the goalkeeper position. Jorgensen was chosen over Robert Sanchez in a crucial match of the season. Jorgensen's serious mistake—a faulty pass from his own area—helped PSG take a 3-2 lead.

Similarly, Tottenham's case saw manager Igor Tudor field Antonin Kinsky against Atletico Madrid, only to substitute him after 17 minutes due to a critical error.

In the second leg, Premier League teams must strive to secure advancement. Particularly, Man City, Tottenham, and Chelsea face the risk of elimination in this round after heavy defeats (all by three-goal margins) in the first leg.

According to Opta, the chances for these three teams to turn things around are very low. In Champions League history, there have been 51 instances where teams lost the first leg by three goals or more, but only four successfully reversed the situation.
