ACCORDING TO A SOURCE IN THE BRITISH MEDIA "GIVEMESPORT", MANCHESTER UNITED ARE NOW CONSIDERING SIGNING A NEW CONTRACT WITH MAGUIRE AFTER ACTIVATING HIS ONE-YEAR EXTENSION CLAUSE A FEW WEEKS AGO, AS IT WILL GIVE MANAGER RUBEN AMORIM MORE ROOM TO REBUILD HIS SQUAD THIS SUMMER.
Manchester United are now limited in transfer funds, and Amorim has admitted that he must bring in a sign before buying him in the summer. As such, he is unlikely to have as much money to spend as his predecessor Ten Hag, so the club intend to sign Maguire on a longer-term contract at the end of the season.
Maguire has been back on the starting list since Amorim took charge of Manchester United, so he could be offered a long-term contract on different terms. Maguire is currently earning more than £190,000 a week and is open to free transfer at the end of next season if he does not renew his contract.
Maguire has become a key part of Amorim's plans, with the £80million defender playing the full 90 minutes in United's 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur last weekend. In the previous FA Cup elimination of Leicester City, Maguire scored a stoppage-time header against his old club to send the Red Devils to the quarter-finals.
Maguire's contract talks could begin in the coming months. United want to improve the salary structure of the team in a different way, so the 31-year-old may have to take a pay cut if he wants to renew his contract, but the club may agree to increase the incentive bonus amount.
Maguire has had his ups and downs since joining United in August 2019 at the world's most expensive central defender, with his career at a low point during his tenure at Erik ten Hag, narrowly missing a £30 million sale to West Ham United, but he has reinstated his name with determination and performance.
It is reported that Amorim wants Maguire to stay in the team as he is trying to form a new squad that needs a dressing room leader. In addition, the 40-year-old Portuguese boss believes Maguire is a perfect fit for a back three, and staying in the club will ensure that there are not too many new centre-backs in the summer window, and the funds can be used to strengthen other positions, and United could lose centre-backs Victor Lindelof and Evans who are out of contract this summer.
Amorim agrees that Maguire is one of the few leading players in the squad and has maintained an active voice in the dressing room and at Carrington's training ground despite being stripped of the captain's armband during Ten Hag's tenure. Maguire's mentality and professionalism have been recognised during the change of manager this season, so there is a chance to stay with the club for a longer period of time.
United's new boss may have learned the lesson of Ten Hag, with the retired Raphael Varane revealing that the 54-year-old Dutch coach is regularly clashing with senior players in the squad, including Harry Maguire. 'Ten Hag has hardly any flexibility in terms of adaptation on the pitch and the game plan is very, very precise and includes a lot of information. It's hard to find the right words to describe it, and sometimes it's very tense." Varane said: "Ten Hag sometimes listens to the players' feedback, but sometimes makes decisions regardless of the players' feelings. So the situation has its ups and downs, and it's quite complicated. I had some comments on him, I told him some truth, and I said that I didn't agree with the way he handled the team, and that was not good for the team. He said he knew, and then I didn't play for nearly two months."
Varane added: 'He's always trying to isolate one player in the squad as a model, and he's done that with at least one important player in the squad. He's always in conflict with the leaders in the dressing room, that's how he manages it."
