Manchester United's left-back Harry Amass, loaned to the Championship this season, initially had ideal development conditions. However, after the club recalled him from Sheffield Wednesday in the winter window and transferred his loan to Norwich, the situation drastically changed. In February, shortly after joining the new team, Amass suffered a training strain, returned to Carrington for treatment, and will not return to the Championship. His first-team season has been forced to end.

The UK's "The Sun" reports that Manchester United originally did not want to terminate the loan agreement, hoping Amass would return to Norwich to complete his six-month loan. However, after examination by Manchester United's medical team, Amass is now expected to remain at Manchester United until the end of the season. Amass, who joined only in September 2023, has not yet met the duration to be considered a Manchester United academy player. Due to not being registered, he certainly cannot represent the first team in the Premier League.
In the first half of the season, Amass performed quite impressively while at Sheffield Wednesday, winning the team's best player award for two consecutive months. Sheffield Wednesday hoped to keep him until the season's end. However, Manchester United refused to extend the loan because Sheffield Wednesday was bottom of the table and relegation was certain. At that time, up to 12 teams were interested in loaning Amass. Manchester United chose to loan him to Norwich, a mid-table team.
Amass, nicknamed "the new Luke Shaw," made his debut as a substitute and helped Norwich defeat top-of-the-table Coventry. Unfortunately, a few days later, he suffered a serious injury during training, diagnosed as a hamstring issue. Manchester United brought him back to the club for treatment, which Norwich manager Philippe Clement expressed disappointment about.
Norwich manager criticized: "We hoped Harry (Amass)'s situation would be different. But Manchester United owns the player, and they decided not to let him come here for rehabilitation treatment, nor to return here for the final weeks. We wish it weren't so. I won't say what Harry wants, that's his own matter, but the fact is this. Manchester United owns the player, and they decided to keep him at the club until the season ends."

This is already the second time this season Amass has been involved in controversy related to a manager. Former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim publicly criticized academy players as unreliable, specifically naming Amass. The young English player posted on social media a photo of himself winning a best player award as a rebuttal, which Amorim then criticized for not communicating face-to-face to resolve issues and choosing to complain online. Notably, when Amorim was dismissed, Amass publicly thanked the Portuguese, displaying his English gentlemanly demeanor.
Unfortunately, Manchester United's two loan decisions in the winter window have also proven to be mistakes. Toby Collyer, loaned to Championship side Hull City, also suffered a serious injury and did not gain the expected experience. This summer, Manchester United hoped that after a season of practical testing, some young players could join the first team as substitutes. However, it now appears that only goalkeeper Radek Vitek, also at Championship club Bristol City, might be capable of doing so.
Vitek has become one of the Championship's best goalkeepers, attracting interest from many teams. Manchester United hopes this 22-year-old Czech goalkeeper will stay as the second goalkeeper. However, after experiencing being a starter this season, he desires consistent playing opportunities rather than sitting on the bench.
Manchester United might capitalize on Vitek's rising value to sell him for substantial profit. In the summer of 2023, the club generated £22.7 million from selling academy goalkeepers Dean Henderson (£15 million) and Matej Kovar (£7.7 million).

But this does not solve the problem of Sena Ramens lacking an ideal substitute. Some believe Manchester United should try to persuade Vitek to stay. The team led by Carrick has hopes of returning to the Champions League. Vitek, as a backup goalkeeper, could play as the starter in domestic cup matches.
