Real Madrid is escalating its conflict with the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) by officially severing relations and publicly stating that domestic competitions are being "distorted" by refereeing work.
This shocking decision stems from a series of recent controversies, culminating in the 1-1 draw against Girona. The incident in the 88th minute, when Kylian Mbappé was elbowed in the penalty area by Vitor Reis but no penalty was awarded, became the "final straw." Real Madrid's leadership views this as clear evidence of unfairness, especially since VAR did not intervene.
Coach Álvaro Arbeloa expressed frustration: "That was a clear penalty. It should be called anywhere, on Earth or the Moon. But it's the same every week." He also criticized the operation of VAR, claiming the system "intervenes arbitrarily."
Not limited to just one match, Real Madrid believes unfavorable decisions have repeatedly occurred throughout the season. Despite unstable performance (winning only 3 of their last 7 matches), the Royal club considers refereeing factors as the primary reason they are struggling in the race against Barcelona.
The relationship between the two sides had already been fractured beforehand. General Manager José Ángel Sánchez participated in referee reform meetings but withdrew at the last minute. President Florentino Pérez also wanted to minimize RFEF interference until a "complete reform" is implemented.

"Whether on Earth or the Moon, that play should result in a penalty," Coach Arbeloa was extremely frustrated.
The tension is also evident diplomatically. During the Champions League match against Bayern, RFEF President Rafael Louzán was not seated next to Aleksander Ceferin as usual but was placed in the row behind.
Real Madrid even believes some refereeing decisions show signs of being "intentional," especially when similar situations are handled differently. While acknowledging that errors can occur, they do not accept mistakes that are not corrected.

President Florentino Perez publicly "declares war" on the RFEF.
On the pitch, the draw with Girona worsened the situation. Despite dominating the game (xG 2.22 vs 0.52), Real Madrid lost the victory due to missed opportunities and an unstable defense. Rotating the lineup to prepare for the Champions League also led to disjointed play.
This result leaves Real Madrid lagging in the title race, facing the risk of falling 9 points behind. In this context, refereeing controversies further fuel a serious crisis of confidence, not only for Real Madrid but also for La Liga's global image.
