Coach Arne Slot: 'Liverpool deserved to win, but PSG showed too much resilience'

Despite creating numerous opportunities at Anfield, Liverpool still suffered a defeat against PSG, leaving Coach Arne Slot unable to hide his regret over a result that was completely contrary to their performance.

Early morning on April 15 (Vietnam time), Liverpool hosted Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 quarter-finals. Despite starting with determination and creating several chances, the home team still suffered a 0-2 defeat, thereby being eliminated with an aggregate score of 0-4 after two matches.

After the match, attention focused on the remarks of Coach Arne Slot, who could not hide his disappointment with the outcome. He believed Liverpool deserved more, while acknowledging the difference came from the opponent's finishing quality – a decisive factor in this encounter.

Speaking after the match, Coach Arne Slot stated: “Last week, we were fortunate to only lose 0-2, but today it was the opposite; this result is unfair to what we displayed.”

Liverpool's head coach continued: “In my opinion, we should have won, but we must also acknowledge their quality and class in not conceding despite our many opportunities, and the finishing ability of Ousmane Dembele – who demonstrated why he won the Ballon d'Or.”

The actual on-field situation showed Liverpool was not inferior. From the early minutes, the English team continuously pressed forward with attacks, with chances coming from Alexander Isak and Ryan Gravenberch. However, PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov had an outstanding day by repeatedly making saves.

On the other side, PSG opted for a more pragmatic approach, playing tightly and waiting for counter-attacking opportunities. Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia became dangerous spearheads, keeping Liverpool's defense constantly alert, though the first half ended without a goal.

The turning point emerged in the second half as Liverpool increased pressure and was even awarded a penalty opportunity in the 65th minute. However, after consulting VAR, the referee overturned the decision, causing the home team to lose a golden opportunity to break the deadlock.

Not capitalizing on the chance, Liverpool paid the price. In the 72nd minute, Kvaratskhelia assisted Dembele to score the opener before the striker himself completed a brace in the 90+1 minute after Bradley Barcola's pass, sealing a 2-0 victory for PSG and concluding the tie with a convincing aggregate score of 4-0.
