Indonesian Newspaper: 'Big Win Over Vietnam, Indonesia Secures Southeast Asia Semifinal Ticket'

Despite facing difficulties after losing to Malaysia, Indonesian media still believes the home team will reach the semifinals if they defeat U17 Vietnam by a 3-goal margin to independently decide the top spot.

A narrow 0-1 defeat against U17 Malaysia on the evening of April 16, 2026 at Gelora Joko Samudro Stadium pushed the host U17 Indonesia into a precarious situation. From a position of self-determination, coach Kurniawan Dwi Yulianto's team now ranks third in Group A and faces the challenge of needing to beat the group leader U17 Vietnam in the final match.

According to the regulations of the 2026 ASEAN U17 Championship, only the top three group winners and the best-performing runner-up qualify for the semifinals. Currently, U17 Vietnam leads the group with a perfect 6 points, while Malaysia and Indonesia both have 3 points (Malaysia ranks higher due to head-to-head results).

The sports newspaper SuperBall from Indonesia assessed: "Regardless of other match results, this is the scenario for the Indonesian U-17 team to secure a semifinal spot... Indonesia still realistically has the chance to become Group A champion and directly qualify."

The loss to Malaysia pushed the archipelago's team into a desperate situation in the race for a semifinal ticket

To realize this scenario, Indonesia needs a big win over the squad of Vietnam's U17 coach. Specifically, Indonesia needs to win by at least a three-goal margin in this match to secure a semifinal spot. If this scenario occurs, even if Malaysia beats Timor-Leste to create a three-way race with 6 points, Indonesia will still top the group due to the tie-breaking criteria.

Analyzing deeper the mini-group ranking among the three teams (Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia), the SuperBall calculated: "If Indonesia beats Vietnam with a 3-0 score, they will have a better goal difference... More specifically, Indonesia will lead the mini-group ranking with a goal difference of +2, followed by Vietnam (+1) and Malaysia (-3)."

If they cannot take the top spot from Vietnam, Indonesia's chance to advance will entirely depend on the results of opponents in other groups

In the case of winning by only a 1 or 2-goal margin, Indonesia will face greater risks: "Indonesia will have to settle for the runner-up position in the group if they win by a one or two-goal margin and Malaysia also wins." Then, they will have to compare statistics with other group runners-up like Cambodia or Myanmar - teams currently having an advantage in points.

Although pressure weighs heavily after the loss to Malaysia, Coach Kurniawan Dwi Yulianto remains steadfast in optimism. He spoke up to take responsibility for the previous loss to reduce pressure on his players, while affirming the determination to create a surprise against U17 Vietnam - a team currently in destructive form with 14 goals scored and no conceded goals.

Speaking to the media, Coach Kurniawan emphasized: "In football, anything can happen. We will fight to the fullest for 90 minutes against Vietnam". The upcoming major clash is not only a battle for the semifinal ticket, but also a test of the U17 Indonesia team's mettle against the formidable strength from the Vietnamese representative.
