Frank Lampard tears up as he guides his team back to the Premier League after a 25-year wait

English football legend Frank Lampard couldn't hold back his emotions after leading Coventry City to officially secure promotion to the Premier League after 25 years of anticipation.

In a 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers' ground, Coventry needed just one point to guarantee direct promotion, and they achieved it in a dramatic fashion. The hero of the match was center-back Bobby Thomas with his equalizing goal in the 84th minute, causing over 7,500 away fans to erupt in joy.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Lampard choked up: "It's incredible. What the fans have gone through, the disappointments, the tough moments…" His voice trailed off before he continued: "To achieve promotion with a club without significant financial advantages, seeing the players there… it moves me. They deserve every moment of this celebration."

The former Chelsea star also admitted this is one of the proudest achievements in his coaching career: "This is truly special. We've accomplished more than expected. Direct promotion wasn't even in the initial plan."

Manager Lampard was emotional during the post-match interview following Coventry's achievement.

Few forget that Coventry had fallen to League Two (the fourth tier) in 2017. From the depths of despair, they gradually climbed back, despite tasting the bitter defeat to Luton Town in the 2023 playoff final. This season, Coventry underwent a powerful transformation to secure early promotion three rounds ahead.

Lampard also didn't forget to acknowledge his predecessor Mark Robins, who laid the foundation for the club's revival: "This is the result of many years of effort, especially during difficult periods. The contribution of everyone, including Mark Robins, is immense."

This feat also marks Lampard's return to the Premier League as a manager. Previously, he had managed Chelsea and Everton, and also served as interim manager at Chelsea during the 2022-23 season.

Sixteen months ago, when Lampard took over, Coventry was 17th in the standings, just one point above the relegation zone.

Lampard stated the whole team will celebrate, but the goal hasn't stopped there as they still aim for the Championship title. He also emphasized the spirit of unity and the relentless effort of his players, particularly influential dressing room figures like Jake Bidwell and Jamie Allen.

The overwhelming joy of Coventry fans.

In the past, Coventry had 34 consecutive seasons in England's top flight and were famous for their dramatic "escape" abilities in relegation battles. Their only major trophy is the FA Cup title in 1987. Coventry's journey becomes even more meaningful given they've endured many bitter failures, including the defeat to Luton Town in the 2023 Championship playoff final and the loss to Sunderland in the semifinals the previous season. Now, they will return to the Premier League for the 2026-27 season.
