Which opponent will Vietnam U17 'choose' in the Southeast Asia U17 semifinals?

The situation of the 2026 Southeast Asia U17 Championship is developing in a way few anticipated, and this unexpectedly places Vietnam U17 in a challenging predicament: which route should they follow to optimize their opportunity for victory?

Vietnam U17 will face a tougher opponent if... they top Group A

Major surprises in Group B have completely altered the tournament bracket. Laos U17 created a shock by defeating Thailand U17 3-2 to claim the top spot in the group. Meanwhile, Myanmar U17 was eliminated from the race for the best runner-up position. This means that semifinal 2 will be a clash between the winner of Group A and the winner of Group C – which has already been confirmed as Australia U17.

Given the current situation, the scenario for Vietnam U17 is quite clear: If they top Group A: they will face Australia U17 – an opponent considered one of the strongest in the tournament. If they advance as the best runner-up: they are likely to meet Laos U17 – a "phenomenal" team but theoretically a more manageable opponent. It should be noted that Laos U17's recent 3-2 victory over Thailand U17 was largely because their opponent fielded a secondary squad consisting of U16 players from football centers and schools, while their main team was focused on preparing for the AFC U17 Asian Cup finals.

At first glance, "avoiding" Australia to choose Laos seems like a reasonable strategy. But youth football is never that simple.

Should Vietnam U17 strategize?

In theory, coach Cristiano Roland could certainly strategize. In the final match, Vietnam only needs to avoid losing to Indonesia U17 to secure the top spot. Conversely, if they lose under certain specific scenarios, the team could still advance but drop to the runner-up position.

However, "choosing an opponent" is always a double-edged sword. Firstly, deliberately manipulating results can easily disrupt the team's rhythm and morale, especially for a U17 squad that lacks stability. Secondly, Laos U17 is no longer an "easy" opponent. Their victory over Thailand demonstrates excellent organization and spirit, even though the opponent wasn't at full strength. And thirdly, to win the championship, sooner or later they must overcome the strongest teams – and Australia is the clearest test.

From a professional perspective, the most sensible option for Vietnam U17 remains securing the top spot in the group through genuine strength, rather than engaging in risky calculations. A win or at least a draw against Indonesia would not only help the team avoid complicated scenarios but also maintain their momentum. More importantly, facing Australia right from the semifinals could be an opportunity for coach Cristiano Roland and his team to test their true capabilities. If they overcome this hurdle, the path to the championship would open wide both psychologically and in terms of standing.

Vietnam U17 faces a choice that seems easy but is difficult: "choose" an opponent or choose themselves. In top-level football – even at youth level – champions rarely take detours. And perhaps, the clearest answer remains: to claim the title, be ready to defeat anyone.
