Coach Shukor Adan made notable remarks after Malaysia U17 reached the semifinals of the 2026 Southeast Asia U17 Championship.
The head coach of Malaysia U17, Mr. Shukor Adan, praised the fighting spirit of his players after the team overcame a tough group stage to secure a spot in the semifinals of the 2026 Southeast Asia U17 Championship. Despite an unfavorable start with a 0-4 loss to Vietnam U17, the "Young Tigers" demonstrated resilience and composure to bounce back at the right moment, thereby achieving their goal of reaching the knockout round.
Reflecting on the heavy defeat against Vietnam U17, the Malaysian strategist acknowledged that the team faced considerable pressure from public opinion. He stated that after that loss, the entire team was heavily criticized, but the crucial point was that the coaching staff always understood the reality that this was only a U16 squad, with many players just 15 years old and experiencing an international competition environment for the first time.
According to Coach Shukor Adan, the young players need time to adapt and mature. He emphasized that the defeat against Vietnam was a valuable lesson rather than a shock. What satisfied him most was not the result, but how the players responded afterward. Particularly in the crucial match against Indonesia, the whole team displayed a strong fighting spirit, refusing to give up and playing with much greater confidence.
After the disappointing opening match, the most important task for the coaching staff was to help the players regain their morale. He mentioned that the assistants focused on improving both physical fitness and psychological state for the entire team, helping the players quickly return to their best condition. The discipline in training and the determination to overcome difficulties among his players were what made him most proud.
Securing a place in the semifinals gives Malaysia U17 additional motivation to aim for the championship, a title they last won in 2019. However, Coach Shukor also stressed that the team must not underestimate their semifinal opponent, Laos U17. He assessed Laos as a formidable squad, having remained unbeaten in the group stage and particularly surprising with a 3-2 victory over Thailand U17.
He believes Laos U17 possesses a very sharp counter-attacking style, good team spirit, and a strong desire to win. Therefore, Malaysia needs to maintain maximum focus if they want to secure a spot in the final. Good news for the team is that currently no players are suffering from serious injuries or suspensions. Coach Shukor also hopes that support from home fans will provide additional strength for his players to advance to the final on April 24.
