Controversy erupted when Dominic Calvert-Lewin escaped a red card despite pulling an opponent's hair, causing Manchester United fans to be furious as they believe the rules are being applied inconsistently.
Manchester United supporters are in uproar over the incident where striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin avoided a red card, despite having committed a hair-pulling action during the FA Cup semi-final match between Leeds United and Chelsea.
In a controversial play, the Leeds striker was accused of grabbing defender Marc Cucurella's hair, yet the referee issued no penalty. This decision immediately sparked fierce criticism from Manchester United fans, who argue that there is inconsistency in the application of the rules.
On social media platform X, many angry opinions were posted. One person wrote: “Martinez was even sent off for a less serious foul than this.”
Another account commented: “The rules are clearly being applied inconsistently, which harms the league.”
Furthermore, some opinions suggest that Manchester United is suffering disadvantages and call for clubs to take legal action against PGMOL.
The incident became even more controversial when just days earlier, Manchester United's appeal regarding the red card of Lisandro Martinez (also for a hair-pulling action, ironically against Calvert-Lewin himself) was rejected by the FA. The Argentine defender received a three-match suspension, with the reason that this behavior “should not be tolerated” in football.
Previously, Everton's Michael Keane was also sent off for a similar foul against Tolu Arokodare from Wolves.
In the official report, the FA disciplinary committee emphasized that although hair-pulling is not as dangerous as many other violent acts, it still needs to be dealt with strictly to ensure fairness and deterrence. However, the inconsistent application has become the focus of criticism.
Manchester United's interim manager, Michael Carrick, also could not hide his disappointment. He called the decision to send off Martinez earlier “shocking,” and argued that a clear distinction should be made between touching hair and aggressively pulling hair.
“It was not a violent act, there was no clear pulling force. We need to be careful about the direction football is heading. That decision was truly shocking,” Carrick emphasized.
