Thai player scores controversial goal against Vietnam and suffers severe injury

Thai media expresses concern as Supachok sustains a serious injury, risking missing the 2026 ASEAN Cup and facing a major career turning point.

The difficult period for midfielder Supachok Sarachat continues as he suffers a severe injury while playing for club Sapporo in J-League 2. According to the latest announcement from the Japanese team, the Thai player has sustained a medial collateral ligament (MCL) knee injury – a type of injury that is not uncommon but always carries significant risks for a player's career.

The injury occurred during Sapporo's victory over Matsumoto one week ago. Supachok had to leave the field in the 62nd minute with a painful expression, and after examination, the medical team confirmed his condition as “very serious.” From this point, Thai media collectively worries about the possibility that the 27-year-old star may face a long-term absence from play.

According to Khaosod, ligament injuries are always a concern. Although MCL is usually less severe than ACL, the recovery time remains considerable. Based on assessment, the mildest cases still require at least 3 months, while if severe, Supachok could be sidelined for up to half a year, not counting the time needed to regain form and match fitness after returning.

Therefore, many sources in Thailand believe that 2026 is almost closed for Supachok. The greatest risk is that he may not be able to participate in the 2026 ASEAN Cup, scheduled for July. This is considered a significant loss for the Thai national team as they seek to regain their standing in the region.

Notably, this injury comes just as Supachok had the opportunity to return to the starting lineup after a long period of losing his position. However, his performance prior to this was not particularly impressive. This season, the midfielder born in 1998 has only scored 1 goal and provided no assists in J-League 2, continuing a decline from the 2025 season with only 2 goals and 3 assists in 31 matches.

Not only professional issues, Supachok is also a controversial name on the regional pitch. In the 2024 ASEAN Cup final against the Vietnamese national team, his 64th-minute goal sparked strong reactions as it originated from a situation where the ball was not returned after play was stopped, deemed lacking fair-play spirit.

Additionally, many opinions also state that Supachok plays aggressively, frequently engages in hard collisions, and employs some tricks. The combination of his skill, personality, and controversies keeps him in the spotlight. But now, with the injury striking, Supachok's future faces a bigger question than ever.
